The University of Maine baseball team travels to Binghamton to end the 2008 season. Maine is 19-26-1 on the season and 7-13 in America East play. Binghamton, who is currently tied for first place in the latest America East standings, is 25-24 on the season and 13-7 in America East play. SCOUTING THE MAINE BLACK BEARS: Maine is led by Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) who is hitting .388 on the season with a team-high 55 runs scored and 36 RBI. He has 14 doubles, 11 home runs and three triples to go along with 11 stolen bases. Smith has a .709 slugging percentage. Myckie Lugbauer (Mahopac, N.Y.) is hitting .353 with 36 runs scored and a team-high 41 RBI. He has a team-high 19 doubles, five home runs and two triples. Billy Cather (Worcester, Mass.) is hitting .341 with 35 runs scored and 25 RBI. He has seven doubles and leads the team in stolen bases with 15. Jarrett Lukas (Old Town, Maine) is hitting .323 with 20 runs scored and 28 RBI. He has six doubles and four home runs. Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine) is hitting .293 with 23 runs scored and 22 RBI. Tony Patane (New Milford, Conn.) is chipping in with a .291 batting average with 37 runs scored and 33 RBI. He has 10 doubles, three triples and three home runs. Mark Ostrander (Hopkinton, Mass.) is hitting .286 with 13 runs scored and 13 RBI. He has five doubles and four home runs on the season. Joey Martin (Portland, Maine) is chipping in with a .286 batting average as well with 14 runs scored and 14 RBI. He has seven doubles on the season. Kevin Jackson (Wappingers Falls. N.Y.) is hitting .264 with six runs scored and 10 RBI. Danny Menendez (Miami, Fla.) has a .255 batting average with 27 runs scored and 19 RBI. He has 10 doubles, 10 stolen bases and has drawn 24 walks on the season. Joe Mercurio (Brewster, N.Y.) is hitting .221 with 16 runs scored and 13 RBI. The Maine pitching staff is led by Joe Miller (Valley Stream, N.Y.) who is 5-2 on the season with a 3.93 ERA. He has struck out 46 batters in 55.0 innings. Kevin Scanlan (Sudbury, Mass.) is 2-5 on the season with a team-best 3.84 ERA. He leads the team in strikeouts with 68 on the season in a team-high 61.0 innings. Matt Jebb (Toronto, Ontario) is also 2-5 on the season. He has a 4.03 ERA and has struck out 61 batters on the campaign in 60.1 innings. Kyle Benoit (Brampton, Ontario) is 3-1 with a 5.35 ERA. Alejandro Balsinde (Miami, Fla.) and Joel Thorney (Toronto, Ontario) each have two wins on the season. MAINE COACHING STAFF IN 2008: Maine head coach Steve Trimper (Eastern Connecticut State University '92) returns for his third season at the helm of the Black Bears. He has an overall record of 248-253-4 in his 10th season as a head coach. He has a record of 76-79-2 in his third season with the Black Bears. He is assisted by Jared Holowaty (Eastern Connecticut State University '02), Aaron Izaryk (Maine '05) and Mark Michaud (Eastern Connecticut State University '02). SCOUTING THE BINGHAMTON BEARCATS: Binghamton is 25-24 on the season and 13-7 in America East play. The Bearcats are led by Peter Bregartner who is hitting .330 with 36 runs scored and 28 RBI. He has nine doubles and five home runs, to go along with 10 stolen bases. Joe Charron is hitting .309 with 39 runs scored and 41 RBI. He leads the team in both doubles with 16 and in home runs with seven. Brian Ivan is batting .296 with 21 runs scored and 29 RBI. Ryan James is batting .296 with a team-high 50 runs scored and 23 RBI. He has 18 stolen bases on the season. The pitching staff is led by Zach Groh is 4-3 with a 3.80 ERA. He has struck out a team-high 62 batters on the season. Murphy Smith is 5-4 with a 4.35 ERA. Jeff Dennis is 4-4 with a 4.59 ERA. He has fanned 55 batters on the campaign. Binghamton is coached by Tim Sinicki (Western Carolina '88) who is in his 16th season. He has a record of 322-344-6. He is assisted by Ryan Hurba (Oswego State '96), Andy Hutchings (Binghamton '05) and Ed Folli (Springfield). MAINE AND BINGHAMTON ALL-TIME: Maine and Binghamton have met 21 time with Maine holding a 13-8 edge in the series. The Bearcats have won six of the last seven games in the series. SMITH PLAYS IN 200TH CAREER GAME: Curt Smith played in his 200th career game on Sunday, April 27 against Stony Brook. He has currently seen action in 208 career games. Danny Menendez is second on the team with 152 career games played. The Maine record for career games played is 238 held by Mark Sweeney. SMITH NEARING 50: Curt Smith has currently stolen 49 career bases, needing just one to reach the 50 plateau. THROWING OUT BASE RUNNERS: In a doubleheader against Vermont on May 10, cather Myckie Lugbauer caught seven Vermont base runners trying to steal. He threw out five of the base runners and tagged two out in run-downs. CATHER TIES STOLEN BASES RECORD: Billy Cather tied the Maine record for stolen bases in a game with three on Wednesday, April 16 at Coppin State. It is the 17th time in Maine history that a player has stolen three bases in a game. Cather leads Maine in stolen bases with 14. CONSECUTIVE GAMES PLAYED: Curt Smith leads all Black Bears, having played in 83 consecutive games dating back to last season. Danny Menendez is second on the team as he has currently seen action in 63 consecutive games. A GEM BY BALSINDE: In a must-win game, Alejandro Balsinde pitched one of the best games of his Maine career on Saturday, May 3. He pitched a complete seven inning game where he allowed just one run on five hits. He struck out five batters in the game. Balsinde retired the side in order in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings. SMITH GOING DEEP: Curt Smith leads the team in home runs with 11. The 11 home runs are a career-high for Smith. It is the most home runs by a Maine player since Joe Drapeau hit 11 in 2003. Smith has 27 career home runs. DOUBLE THE FUN: The Black Bears tied a school record with seven doubles on Sunday, April 6 in their 19-0 win over NJIT. It is the fifth time in Maine history that the Black Bears have belted seven doubles in a game. The last time was against Long Island University during the 2003 season.
