Smith, Miller Receive NEIBA Honors

ORONO, Maine--University of Maine baseball standout Curt Smith (Willemstad, Curacao) was named to the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association First Team on Tuesday, May 27, while pitcher Joe Miller (Valley Stream, N.Y.) earned Second Team honors. It is the second year in a row that Smith has been honored, as he was named to the NEIBA Second Team in 2007. Smith, the 2008 America East Player of the Year, hit .403 for the Black Bears with a team-high 60 runs scored and 37 RBI. He had 17 doubles, 11 home runs to go along with three triples. Smith, who was named to the America East First Team, led America East in batting average (.403), slugging percentage (.722), runs scored (60) and total bases (127). Smith left his mark on the Maine record books as he is Maine's all-time leader in career triples (19), ranks second in hits (300), third in double (60) and tied for third in RBI (178). Miller, who completed his first season with the Black Bears, posted a record of 5-2 with a 3.93 ERA. He struck out 46 batters in 55 innings pitched. He led Maine with three complete games. He pitched eight innings in a game at UNLV early in the season where he allowed two runs, just one of which was earned, on five hits. He struck out a season-high eight batters on March 29 at Wagner. The All-New England Division I First and Second Teams constitute the University Division roster for the 2008 NEIBA New England Collegiate Baseball All-Star Game to be played at Fenway Park on June 14.
