ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine men's basketball team defeated Cape Breton 72-57 in an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon at the Alfond Arena. Troy Barnies (Auburn, Maine) led the way with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Maine ran out to a 16-6 lead six minutes into the game courtesy of a pair of Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) trifectas.
The Black Bears would extend the lead to 28-14 with eight minutes left in the first half when McLemore nailed another three.
Maine continue to put the pressure on the rest of the half to take a 40-24 halftime lead.
McLemore led the surge with nine points in the first stanza while Sean McNally (Gardiner, Maine), Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) and Murphy Burnatowski (Waterloo Ontario) each poured in six points. Maine dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Capers 29-14.
Cape Breton would chip away at the lead, and midway through the second half the Capers had whittled it down to single digits at 54-45.
However, a 12-4 Maine run capped by McLemore with just under six minutes left would push the lead to 66-47 and out of the reach of Cape Breton.
Burnatowski and McLemore would each finish with 14 points while Fraser added eight points and seven rebounds. Andrew Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) gave out five assists.
Maine shot 40.6 percent from the field, including 42.9 percent from behind the arc while limiting Cape Breton to 37.3 percent shooting and 23.3 percent from long range. The Black Bears won the rebounding battle 50-27.
Maine begins the regular season on Nov. 12 at Utah Valley.
