ORONO, Maine- Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario) scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had six blocks in his first game back to lead the Maine men's basketball team to a 77-60 win over Utah Valley on Monday night. Maine is now 4-4 on the season while Utah Valley falls to 6-7.
Maine opened up a 17-10 lead seven minutes into the contest and made it 29-14 with 10 minutes left when Gerald McLemore swished a three from the top of the arc. McLemore had 12 points in the run while Edwards had 11.
Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) pushed the lead to 34-15 with 8:22 left and an Allison layup and the fouled made it a 22-point lead with 7:23 left.
The Wolverines cut into the lead with a run of their own, making it 39-26 with 4:36 left in the half. However, Maine closed on a 6-to-2 run with Svetoslav Chetinov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) making a layup with a second left, giving the Black Bears a 45-28 halftime lead.
Edwards had 13 points and five rebounds in the first half while McLemore added 12. Allison had seven points, three rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
The Black Bears opened up the second half on an 11-to-1 run, but the pesky Wolverines closed the gap to 56-45 with 12:53 left.
The Wolverines made it 60-52 with eight minutes left, but the Black Bears went on a 15-to-6 run the next six minutes to make it 75-58 and seal the win.
Edwards finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists while McLemore finished with 19 points. Fraser added 12 points and five rebounds.
Allison was named Maine's America East Player of the Game.
Ben Aird scored 13 points and had eight rebounds for Utah Valley.
