Men's Basketball Wins Third-Straight, 71-58 Over Brown
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Maine men's basketball team used a 12-to-2 run midway through the second half to take an 11-point lead en route to a 71-58 win over Brown on Friday afternoon. Maine was led by America East Player of the Game Justin Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) who had 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists while Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) added 17 points and eight rebounds. Maine is now 6-4 on the season while Brown falls to 5-8.
Maine took a 9-8 lead when Edwards drove the lane, hung in the air and hit a jumper.
Edwards expanded the lead to 15-10 as he drove baseline and double-pumped in the air and made the layup.
Brown tied the game at 17 before Fraser made a jumper from the free throw line with 9:30 left.
Fraser tied the game at 27 on a pair of free throws with 3:48 left, and McLemore broke the tie with a jumper with 1:30 left.
Brown converted a three-point play with just under a minute left to take a 30-29 lead into halftime.
Fraser had eight points and three rebounds in the first half while Edwards had seven points, four boards and three assists.
Maine shot 39 percent while Brown shot 43 percent.
The teams exchanged baskets before Edwards drove the lane, made the layup and got fouled. The free throw gave Maine a two-point lead.
Brown came back to tie at 34, and Maine had a 36-35 lead with 16:31 left.
The Black Bears responded and went on a 12-to-2 run spurred by five points from Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) to take a 48-37 lead capped by a McLemore three-pointer with 12:29 left.
Maine continued to pressure and pushed the lead to 68-49 with six minutes left on an Edwards layup to seal the win.
Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario) had nine points and 10 rebounds while Singleton finished with 11 points and four rebounds.
Matt Sullivan had 15 points and five rebounds for Brown.
