Men's Basketball Falls to Albany
ALBANY, N.Y. – The University of Maine men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker to Albany 76-75 on Saturday evening. Maine was led by its America East Player of the Game Justin Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) who had had a team-high 19 points. Maine is now 8-7 overall and 2-2 in America East play while Albany improves to 12-7 and 4-1 in league play.
The Great Danes scored the first six points before Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) got the Black Bears on the board when Rogers stole the ball and pushed it up to him for the fast break two-handed dunk.
Justin Edwards found Fraser for another dunk moments later, but the Great Danes were on fire early on and took a 12-4 lead.
Maine answered with a 13-to-4 run courtesy of four points each from Edwards and Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario), taking a 17-16 lead with 10 minutes left.
Albany responded by going on a 10-to-3 run, but Edwards and Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) each made a pair from the charity stripe, bringing Maine within 26-24 with under seven minutes remaining.
The Black Bears got a stop, and Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) drove through the lane and found Cato in the corner for a three to put Maine back on top.
The teams exchanged free throws and an Albany three gave them a 33-32 lead with three minutes left.
A McLemore three and layup around a pair of Great Dane free throws gave Maine a 37-35 lead, but Albany made a three with 18 second left to take a one-point lead into halftime.
McLemore had 10 points in the first stanza while Edwards scored nine and added three rebounds and two assists. Singleton scored five while grabbing four rebounds and giving out two assists.
Maine took a 47-42 lead with 15:17 remaining on a McLemore three-pointer, but Albany scored the next six points to take the lead.
The Black Bears responded and took a 62-55 lead on an Andrew Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) three-pointer with just over 10 minutes to play.
The Great Danes tied the game at 64 with 6:26 left, but McLemore scored the next five points.
Albany came back to take a 75-73 lead with 1:34 left, and Maine had a layup bounce around the rim and off. The Black Bears fouled and the Great Danes made one-of-two from the line.
Edwards grabbed a rebound and made a layup on the other end to get Maine within one with 46 seconds left.
On the ensuing Albany possession, Allison blocked a shot and Kilian Cato (Espoo, Finland) got the rebound. Maine missed its shot at the other end but got the rebound before calling timeout with 17 seconds left.
On the final play of the game, McLemore had the ball and was dribbling with three seconds left looking to shoot.
He appeared to get tripped, but no foul was called and time expired.
