BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Maine men's basketball team fell to Vermont on Monday night by the score of 79-65. Maine is now 8-8 overall and 2-3 in America East play while Vermont is now 10-10 and 4-2 in league play. Justin Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) led Maine with 19 points and seven assists and was Maine's America East Player of the Game.
Vermont went on an 8-to-3 run to get within one with 14:36 left, but Maine scored the next six points on a pair of Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) free throws and a pair of buckets from Edwards.
The Catamounts responded with a 17-to-2 run taking a 25-17 lead with just under six mines to play.
Singleton broke the run with a three from the corner and a pair of free throws to make it 25-22 with just under five minutes to play. An Edwards free throw brought the Black Bears within two.
The Catamounts went on a run to take a 32-25 lead, but a Singleton three-pointer brought Maine within four with three minutes left.
Vermont scored the next two buckets but Allison and Edwards responded to keep Maine within four. Vermont converted a bucket with under a minute left and took a 38-32 lead into halftime.
Singleton had 12 first half points while Edwards had seven and gave out four assists.
The hot-shooting Catamounts opened the second half on a 22-to-7 run, and held a 64-43 lead with nine minutes left.
However, the Black Bears went on a 17-to-5 run courtesy of eight points from Edwards to make it a nine-point game with 5:16 left.
However, the Catamounts were able to score the next five points to push the game just out of reach of the Black Bears.
