Men's Basketball Defeats New Hampshire on Senior Day

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine men's basketball team used a 12-to-4 run midway through the second half to take a 10-point lead en route to a 71-58 win over New Hampshire on Senior Day. Maine is now 12-15 overall and 6-9 in America east play while New Hampshire falls to 12-15 and 6-9.

Maine took an early 13-9 lead on an Andrew Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) drive through the defense for a layup and a 19-13 lead with 12:25 remaining on a Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario) jumper. However, the Wildcats came back and took a 24-23 lead with 3:43 remaining.

The Black Bears responded and closed the half on a 6-to-1 run courtesy of four free throws from Justin Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) and a Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) layup to take a 29-25 lead at the break.

Allison had six points, seven rebounds and two blocks to lead Maine while Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) added six points and six boards.

Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) nailed a jumper and three-pointer to start the second half and give the Black Bears a quick 34-25 lead.

New Hampshire responded and got within 38-34 with 14:09 left, but Edwards made a great spin move in the paint for a layup to push the lead back to six.

The Wildcats answered with a pair of buckets, but the Black Bears went on a 12-to-4 run capped by Singleton layup and foul to take a 10-point edge with 7:17 left.

Ferg Myrick made a pair of free throws for New Hampshire to cut it to eight, but Edwards made a nice no-look pass to Fraser for a two-handed dunk that spurred an 11-to-4 run and provide a 15-point cushion for Maine.

The Wildcats could get no closer than 10 the rest of the way and Edwards' two-handed dunk with two minutes left provided the exclamation point on the victory.

Fraser notched his seventh double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds while McLemore finished with 16 points. Singleton added 12 points and four assists and Edwards 13 points and three assists.

Maine shot 43.3 percent from the field while holding New Hampshire to 37.7 percent. The Black Bears shot an astonishing 95.2 percent from the charity stripe while making 20-of-21 shots.

The five Black Bear seniors - Rogers, McLemore, Singleton, Travon Wilcher (Springfield, Mass.) and Svetoslav Chetinov (Plovdiv, Bulgaria) - were named Maine's America East Players of the Game.

Alvin Abreu was New Hampshire's Player of the Game with 15 points, four rebounds and three assists.
