Former Men's Basketball Great Troy Barnies Signs With Salon Vilpas in Finland's Top Division

ORONO, Maine -- Former University of Maine men's basketball standout Troy Barnies has signed a professional contract to play for Salon Vilpas in Finland's top division.

Barnies is coming off a very good season playing for Istanbulspor in Turkey. He averaged nearly 11 points, six rebounds and a steal per game while shooting 45.5 percent from the field and 73.2 percent from the free throw line in his first professional year. 

While at UMaine, Barnies was named to the All-America East First Team and All-NABC District I Second Team as a senior after ranking ninth in the conference with 14.3 points per game and fifth in rebounding with 7.7 rebounds per contest. He led Maine to a pair of third place finishes in conference play, including a 19-win campaign during the 2009-10 season.

The 2012-13 University of Maine men's basketball team kicks off its season on Oct. 27 against Laval University in an exhibition game at 12 p.m.
