Orono, Maine – The University of Maine men's basketball team took an 80-39 exhibition win over Laval this afternoon at the Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. Maine was led by America East Player of the Game Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario) who had 17 points, eight rebounds and one block.
Maine got off to a quick start as the Black Bears went on a 19-4 run nine minutes into the first half. Allison scored eight of the 19 points for Maine.
The Black Bears would take a 40-17 lead going into halftime. Alasdair Fraser (Falkirk, Scotland) went 5-8 from the floor and 1-2 from the free throw line to lead the team with 11 points in the first half. Justin Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) scored six points, four rebounds, one block, and one assist to finish out the half.
Maine shot 61.3 percent in the first half while Laval shot 33.3 percent.
The Black Bear defense held Laval to 22 points in the second half as Laval shot just 30.8 percent from the floor.
Zarko Valjarevic (Belgrade, Serbia) led all Maine scorers in the second half with 12 points, 4-8 from behind the arc.
Valjarevic ended the game with 15 points, all from 3-point baskets. Fraser finished the game with 13 points, five assists, three rebounds, and two steals.
Maine shot 57.1 percent for the game while Laval shot just 32.0 percent.
The Black Bears finished with 32 rebounds and 11 steals while Laval with 28 rebounds and three steals.
Maine will host Acadia University on November 3 for an 11:30 am exhibition game at Memorial Gym in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears will open up the 2012-13 regular season on the road as they travel to Dartmouth on November 10; tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
