TORONTO, Ontario – Former Black Bears basketball standout Mike Allison has signed a one-year contract with the Durham Wildcats of the Britsh Basketball league (BBL). As a part of this opportunity, Allison will have a chance to earn his Masters of Science in Medical Education at Durham University while getting professional basketball experience.
The former two-time America East All-Defensive team selection averaged 6.5 points and 7.3 rebounds along with 1.7 blocks per game in his final season at Maine. He won College Sports Madness All-AEC third team accolades while being name to the College Sports Madness Preseason All-AEC second team.
"We are very proud of Mike and his new professional contract," Maine basketball head coach Ted Woodward said. "He did a great job on the court and in the classroom for us and it is an exciting experience for him to play professionally and have the ability to earn his Master's degree."
As part of his BBL opportunity, Allison has been awarded a scholarship to Durham University to earn his degree, which is on schedule to be completed by spring of 2014. The Hamilton, Ontario, native plans studying medical education to set himself up to be a doctor or chiropractor at the conclusion of his playing career.
"I am really excited to go to Durham this season," said Allison per the Slan Sports Management release. "This is an exceptional opportunity for me to continue school and build for my future while playing my first year of professional basketball."
Durham is hoping Allison can help them improve upon a 10-23 season last year.
