ORONO, Maine – Junior Zarko Valjarevic paced the Black Bears with 18 points, as the Maine men's basketball team defeated the McGill Redmen, 83-57 in the team's first exhibition contest, in Orono, Maine on Saturday afternoon. The junior from Serbia was one of three Black Bears to hit double-digit points in the opening contest.
Valjeravic finished the day shooting 6-of-10 from the floor, 4-of-7 from beyond the arc and hit both of his free throws in the effort. He also recorded four rebounds.
Garet Beal, in front of a packed Beal's Island crowd, made a strong first impression on Black Bear fans as he recorded double-digit points. The former Jonesport-Beals high school standout finished his first contest with 13 points going 5-of-11 in field goals and hit both free throws he attempted, going 2-of-2.
Coming into the game Vincent Dufort was McGill's top weapon, however the Black Bears focused their defensive game on him, limiting his field goal attempts to five and keeping him to only one three-point try. Dufort finished the game with five points. He did lead the Redmen in total rebounds with 10.
The latest edition of the Black Bears, sports a youthful roster and those first-year players were prominent in this contest. 33 of its 83 points came from its freshman class.
The Black Bears will have one final exhibition contest next weekend when the team hosts Laval University at Memorial Gym on Friday night. That contest is slated for 7 p.m.
