Akanda-Coronel Wins Second-Consecutive America East Player of the Week Award
CAMBRIDGE, Mass – Just one week after receiving his first America East player of the week award, Dimitry Akanda-Coronel has officially won his second, after averaging 19 points and eight rebounds in two games last week. The conference announced that Akanda-Coronel is this week's player of the week while Rodney Elliot of UMBC was named rookie of the week.
The Boston, Mass., native started the week with a strong effort against Chattanooga in the Dr. Pepper Classic championship, where he posted 24 points and six rebounds against the Mocs as the squad nearly won the tournament title on Chattanooga's home court
Akanda-Coronel followed that up with a strong all-around game on Sunday to open conference play against Binghamton as he scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the first double-double of his career and the second for the Black Bears this season.
Maine will attempt to remain undefeated in conference play and search for its first two-game winning streak on Jan. 9 when the team travels to play Hartford at 7 p.m. It will wrap up the week on Saturday in Baltimore, Md., to play UMBC at 3:30 p.m.
