Stellar Performances By Gloger and Pollard Not Enough as Men’s Basketball Falls to Stony Brook, 83-79
BANGOR, Maine – Till Gloger scored a career-high 21 points while Xavier Pollard tallied a double-double but it wasn't enough as the Stony Brook Seawolves took the game, 83-79 at the Cross Insurance Center. With the loss the Black Bear fall to 5-21, 3-11 in America East play, while Stony Brook improved to 20-8 and 12-2 in conference.
Gloger tied Pollard for lead in points with 21, hitting 8-of-11 from the field and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. Meanwhile Pollard tied a career-high in rebounds with 11 paired with 21 points to help Maine's offense which shot 52 percent as a team.
Stony Brook was led by Carson Puriefoy who scored 24 points, while Jameel Warney and Anthony Jackson scored 15 and 14, respectively. The Seawolves shot 45 percent form the field and outrebounded the Black Bears 37-30.
With Stony Brook leading by two in the early going, Maine put together a 7-0 run to take a five-point advantage. Zarko Valjarevic jump-started the Black Bear offense with a three before Shaun Lawton's assist opened Till Gloger up for a jumper. Pollard ended the sprint with a bucket as Maine led 12-7, 4:26 into the opening half.
Maine offense matched Stony Brook until three-straight points from Gloger built the Black Bears' lead to six; it's largest of the opening half.
The Seawolves battled back as their 9-0 run put them on top 20-17 with 13:08 left in the half.
Maine regained its edge when Garet Beal and Lawton hit back-to-back 3-pointers, bumping the Black Bears' lead to four at the midway mark. Lawton kept working the Black Bears' offense as he pushed the floor, dropping an alley-oop pass to Dimitry Ankanda-Coronel who provided the finish as Maine once again led by six.
The Black Bears' six-point advantage remained intact until Stony Brook closed the half with a brief 3-0 run, cutting the Maine lead to 42-39 at the break.
Maine maintained its lead as Gloger found Pollard for a bucket to move the Black Bears' lead to four, 4:25 into the second half.
However, Stony Brook jumped into a 24-6 run over the next seven minutes as the Seawolves built their lead to 14, 69-55, with 8:15 left in the second half.
There was no quit in the Black Bears as they battled all the way back within three following a 13-1 run over a late 4:50 span keyed by five points from Gloger and capped on a Pollard jumper to cut the lead to 78-75 with 31-seconds left.
Maine refused to tighten the gap any further as the Seawolves knocked down clutch free throws the rest of the way to take an 83-79 America East victory.
The Black Bears return to action on Thursday, Feb. 27 when they travel to take on UMass Lowell with tipoff scheduled for 7 PM.
