March 2, 2008

Box Score

BURLINGTON, Vermont- The men's basketball team dropped a tough game to the Vermont Catamounts Sunday afternoon by the score of 89-58. With the loss, Maine fell to 7-22 overall and 3-13 in America East. Vermont improved to 15-14 and 9-7 in league play. Maine was led by freshman Sean McNally (Gardiner, ME.) who had 16 points and seven rebounds while Mike Tribloi (Norwalk, Conn.) led Vermont with 24 points and five rebounds.

The Black Bears took a quick 4-0 lead when Junior Bernal (Manhattan, N.Y.), in his first game back from injury, crossed over a Vermont player and layed the ball in.

Vermont came back and took a 19-6 lead before Maine went on a 7-0 lead to cut the Catamount lead to six points.

Vermont went on a run, but the Black Bears were able to stop it when McNally and Jordan Cook (hampden, ME.) worked a beautiful give-and-go. McNally passed the ball to Cook who was two steps in from the free throw line and gave it right back to the slashing McNally for the layup.

The Black Bears continued to play tough, but the Catamounts shot 60 percent from behind the arc and 56 percent form the field to take a 49-30 lead into halftime. The Black Bears shot 45 percent from the field but only 25 percent from behind the arc.

The Black Bears were led in the first half by Kaimondre Owes' (Brooklyn, N.Y.) 10 points and McNally's six points and five rebounds. Tribloi had 15 points to lead the Catamounts in the first half.

In the second half, Owes had a nice three-point play when he backed his defender down, spun around and was fouled while making the layup. Vermont had a 61-35 lead when Vermont came down and had an easy layup but Malachi Peay (Queens, N.Y.) came racing from behind and swatted the ball away.

Troy Barnies (Auburn, ME.) had a nice move as he drove to the basket and hit a right-handed runner over his defender.

McNally had a nice three-point play with a little over a minute remaining when he stole the ball and took it coast to coast, splitting two Vermont defenders and laying it in. McNally made the following free throw to complete the three-point play.

Owes finished with 15 points for the Black Bears.

For the game, Maine went 21-for-50 from the field and 3-for-14 from three-point range. Vermont went 34-for-73 from the field and 10-for-19 from three-pointt range. Vermont out-rebounded Maine by a 42-to-28 margin.

The Black Bears continue play on Friday, March 7, at 7 p.m. when they take on the Stony Brook Seawolves in the first round of the America East tournament.
