Football Falls to Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y.--The University of Maine football team fell at Syracuse by the score of 38-14 on Saturday night at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. Maine falls to 1-2 on the season while Syracuse goes to 2-1.

Maine got off to a good start as the Black Bears received the opening kick that Steven Barker received. He reversed the play and Desmond Randall ran it back to around the Orange 30-yardline.

The Black Bears would get on the board when Warren Smith (Forked River, N.J.) capped a 14-play, 84-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run to give Maine a 7-0 lead with 4:25 left in the first quarter.

Syracuse responded to tie the game at seven early in the second, but on the ensuing Black Bear drive, Smith found an open Justin Perillo (Wilmington, Del.) for a six-yard touchdown throw. The play capped a five-play, 56-yard drive.

The Orange was able to score a touchdown and field goal to take a 17-14 lead into halftime.

Maine was led by Jared Turcotte (Lewiston, Maine) who rushed for 34 yards on seven carries and Smith who completed 9-of-15 passes for 70 yards and a score.

Dominic Cusano (Wallingford, Conn.) and Donte Dennis (Rahway, N.J.) each notched four tackles for the defense.

The Orange scored twice in the third quarter to take a 31-14 lead, and would add another early in the fourth quarter.
