Football Falls in Heartbreaker to No. 8 William and Mary
ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine football team lost a heartbreaker to No. 8 William and Mary by the score of 24-21 at Alfond Stadium on Saturday evening. With the loss, Maine falls to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in CAA play while William and Mary improves to 3-1 and 1-1 in league play. Maine was led by Pushaun Brown (North Brunswick, N.J.) who rushed for 104 yards and two scores.
Maine got on the board first with 1:59 left in the opening quarter when Brown completed a 14-play, 74-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run.
After a Tribe field goal, Brown notched his second score with 2:04 left when he went in from eight yards out to cap a seven-play, 55-yard drive.
The Black Bears took a 14-3 lead into halftime, and the score remained the same entering the fourth quarter.
William and Mary answered with two touchdowns to take a 17-14 lead, but the Black Bears came right back as Derrick Johnson (Hempstead, N.Y.) recovered a Jordan Waxman (Kitnersville, Pa.) punt that a William and Mary player had fumbled on the 20-yardline.
The Tribe answered with 20 seconds left on a 21-yard touchdown pass to take a 24-21 lead, and Maine ran out of time.
Omar Jacobs (Skyline, Calif.) notched 2.0 tackles-for-loss while Vinson Givans (Cambridge, Mass.) notched eight tackles and a tackle-for-loss. True freshman Michael Mangiarelli (Warren, Ohio) notched his first career interception in the third quarter.
Smith completed 29-of-40 passes for 257 yards and a score while the Tribe's Michael Paulus came in and completed 9-of-16 passes for 104 yards and the winning score.
Maine had 365 yards of total offense while limiting William and Mary to 280 yards.
The Black Bears return to action on Saturday when they host rival New Hampshire at 6 p.m.
