VILLANOVA, Pa. – Warren Smith (Forked River, N.J.) passed for 251 yards and a pair of scores to lead the No. 8 University of Maine football team to a 41-25 win over Villanova. Maine is now 7-1 overall and 5-0 in CAA play while Villanova falls to 1-8 and 0-6 in conference play.
The Black Bears got on the board first with 9:24 left in the first quarter as Smith found an open Maurice McDonald (Paterson, N.J.) for a 33 yard touchdown score.
The drive was setup by a Trevor Coston (Greenlawn, N.Y.) interception that he ran back 25 yards.
The Wildcats answered with 4:08 left in the first half on an Austin Medley five-yard run.
However, Maine would score with just under two minutes left in the half as Pushaun Brown (North Brunswick, N.J.) rushed it in from 10 yards to complete a seven play, 60-yard drive. The Black Bears took the 13-6 lead into halftime.
After the Black Bears forced the Wildcats to miss a field goal early in the third quarter, Smith found an open Arthur Williams (Springfield, Mass.) for an 80-yard score to make it 20-6.
The Black Bears stifled the next Villanova possession, and following a 51-yard pass play to Derek Session (Baltimore, Md.), Smith rushed 29 yards for the score. Chris Treister (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) ran in the conversion to make it 28-6 Maine with 4:31 left in the third.
The Wildcats answered to make it 28-12 going into the fourth.
Brown answered for Maine again as he pushed in a 2-yard score with 10:36 left in the game.
Villanova scored to make it 34-18 with seven minutes left, but David Hood finished off a 9-play, 35-yard drive with two minutes left to seal the game.
