Football Falls to Georgia Southern in NCAA Quarterfinal
STATESBORO, Ga. – The University of Maine football team fell at Georgia Southern in a NCAA Quarterfinal Playoff Game by the score of 35-23. Maine ends it memorable run with a record of 9-4 while Georgia Southern improves to 11-2.
The Eagles took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on scores by Jaybo Shaw and J.J. Wilcox, but on the kickoff following their second score, Roosevelt Boone (Baltimore, Md.) returned it 91 yards for a score with 2:34 left in the quarter.
The Black Bears forced the Eagles into a four-and-out, and Brian Harvey (Wayland, Mass.) capped the drive with a 21-yard field goal to make it 14-10 with 6:10 left in the second quarter.
Georgia Southern responded with a Wilcox score just before halftime to give the Eagles a 21-10 lead at halftime.
The Eagles answered with a pair of scores to make it 35-17, but Smith found an open John Ebeling (Mahwah, N.J.) in the corner of the endzone for a 3-yard score with 5:17 left in the quarter to make it 35-23.
Maine recovered a fumble deep in their own territory as the Eagles were driving, but the Black Bears could not convert on their drive.
The Black Bears had chances but could not cut down the lead.
