Football Falls in CAA Opener to Villanova
ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine football team fell in its CAA opener to Villanova by the score of 35-14 on a rainy evening at Alfond Stadium. Maine falls to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in CAA play while Villanova goes to 4-1 and 2-0 in league play.
Villanova got on the board first when quarterback John Robertson found wide receiver Norman White for a 27-yard touchdown less than two minutes into the game.
Maine responded less than two minutes later when Marcus Wasilewski
(Kulpmont, Pa.) ran it in from seven yards out to complete a 5-play, 76-yard drive that featured a 45-yard catch from running back Rickey Stevens
Villanova regained the lead when Joe Price caught a 26-yard pass from Robertson and took a two-score lead when Kevin Monangai ran it in from 13 yards out with 9:51 remaining in the first half.
Robertson scored on a 10-yard run with 9:14 left in the third and Monangai added a four-yard score with 10:40 left in the fourth.
Wasilewski found Arthur Williams
(Springfield, Mass.) for a 69-yard touchdown with just over 10 minutes left in the fourth to complete the scoring.
Wasilewski finished with a career-high 409 yards passing while defensive back Kendall James
(Roselle, N.J.) made 10 tackles and broke up a pair of passes. Doug Alston (East Orange, N.J.) added an interception for the defense.
Williams finished with three catches for 104 yards and a score while Maurice McDonald (Paterson, N.J.) caught 10 passes for 93 yards and went over the 1,000-yard receiving mark for his career.
The Black Bears continue action next Saturday at Delaware. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.
