Football Announces 2013 Schedule

ORONO, Maine – University of Maine football head coach Jack Cosgrove has announced the team's 2013 schedule. Among the highlights are a pair of contests against FBS foes which include games at the Big Ten's Northwestern Wildcats and against long time rival UMass, which be played at Gillette Stadium, home to the NFL's New England Patriots. The schedule also features the home opener on Sept. 14 against Bryant.

"It its great to finish off this week with the release of our 2013 schedule," said Cosgrove. "This schedule is one of, if not the most, challenging schedule's a Black Bear team has ever played. For the first time, a Maine team will be playing two FBS teams, with the possibility of playing the highest-ranked FBS team ever in program history in Northwestern and playing UMass in Gillette Stadium. In addition to taking on a CAA schedule which is always tough, we will be playing Norfolk State for the first time and will continue our recently started rivalry with Bryant."

Maine kicks off the schedule on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Norfolk State in Virginia. The game will be the first meeting between the two sides.

The Black Bears then travel to take on old rival UMass on Sept. 7. The Minutemen recently moved up to the FBS level and play in the Mid-American Conference. UMass owns a 40-15-1 record against the Black Bears, but Maine won the most recent contest, a 32-21 playoff-clinching win on Nov. 12, 2011.

The Black Bears play their home-opener on Sept. 14 against Bryant. Maine has taken the last two games against the Bulldogs, winning 28-13 two seasons ago in Orono and 51-7 in Smithfield, R.I. last season.

The Black Bears play their second FBS team of the season on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Big Ten school Northwestern. The Wildcats are coming off a 10-3 season and a win in the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl. The Wildcats finished the season ranked 17th in the country.

The Black Bears begin the CAA portion of their schedule the next Saturday, Sept. 28 at perennial power Richmond. The Spiders won a share of the CAA crown last season.

Maine hosts Delaware on Saturday, Oct. 5 and holds a two-game win-streak against the Blue Hens after traveling to Delaware last season and defeating them 26-3.

The Black Bears have a bye week before hosting William and Mary on Oct. 19. The Black Bears defeated The Tribe last season in Williamsburg by the score of 24-10.

Maine travels to Villanova on Saturday, Oct. 26 to try to avenge last season's loss to the Wildcats and hosts CAA newcomer Stony Brook on Saturday, Nov. 2. The Black Bears have not played the Seawolves since 2008, a 28-13 Maine win.

Maine travels to the other CAA newcomer, Albany, on Saturday, Nov. 9 before hosting its season home-finale on Saturday, Nov. 16 against Rhode Island.
