ORONO, Maine -- Two University of Maine football student-athletes have been honored for their performances over the past weekend in the Black Bears' 28-21 win over #22/20 Richmond. Redshirt freshman linebacker Christophe Mulumba (Montreal, Quebec) was honored by the Colonial Athletic Association as its rookie of the week while sophomore running back Nigel Jones (Pleasantville, N.J.) was named the College Sports Madness CAA Offensive Player of the Week.
Mulumba, who receives his second CAA rookie of the week honor of the year, made six tackles and grabbed his second interception of the season while helping the Maine defense hold Richmond to just 65-yards rushing. Mulumba's lunging interception in the second quarter led to one of Jones' three scores on the day. The Black Bear linebacker also added a pass breakup to help Maine move to 4-1 on the year.
Jones paced the Black Bear offensive attack as he rushed for 115-yards on 23 carries with a pair of rushing touchdowns. Jones also hauled in a six-yard pass for a touchdown early in the first quarter as Maine starts conference play 1-0.
The Black Bears return home to Alfond Stadium where they will meet Delaware Saturday at 3:30 PM. For tickets, call 581-BEAR, 1-800-756-TEAM or visit www.GoBlackBearsTickets.com (.)
