ORONO, Maine -- Former University of Maine football wide receiver Derrick Johnson (Hempstead, N.Y.) has re-signed with the New England Patriots as of Friday, July 18. Johnson, who originally signed with the Patriots on May 18, was released on June 9 following an injury.
In 2013, Johnson was tied for the team lead in receptions with 60 for 608 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games.
In the Black Bears' 24-14 victory over UMass in 2013 at the home of the Patriots, Gillette Stadium, Johnson had a team-high five receptions for 38 yards.
While at Maine, Johnson recorded 116 catches for 1,185 yards and four touchdowns in 37 career games.
Johnson joins former Black Bears Mike Devito (Kansas City Chiefs), Kendall James (Minnesota Vikings), Jerron McMillian (Kansas City Chiefs), Matthew Mulligan (Chicago Bears), Justin Perillo (Green Bay Packers) and Montell Owens (Detroit Lions) as former University of Maine football student-athletes currently signed to NFL teams.
