Five Former Black Bears Continuing Their Seasons
Even though the University of Maine's men's ice hockey season has ended, for five Black Bears this is not the case. Since their season at Maine came to a close, Brian Flynn, Spencer Abbott, Will O'Neill, Ryan Hegarty and Matt Mangene have all signed with teams and reported to the American Hockey League.
Brian Flynn has been playing with the Rochester Americans, which is a top affiliate of the National Hockey League's Buffalo Sabres. A right wing, he wears the number 16 on the ice for the team. Since signing Flynn has played in five of the 2011-12 regular season games. He has had one assist along with eight shots on goal.
Spencer Abbott, the Hockey East Player of the Year and Hobey Baker Hat Trick selection, has been playing with the Toronto Marlies. The Marlies are a top affiliate of the NHL Toronto Maple Leafs. Since joining the team Abbott has played in three of the 2011-12 regular season games and has had one assist and wears number 15.
Will O'Neill has been playing with the St. John's Ice Caps. He wears number 23. The St. John's Ice Caps are the top affiliate for the NHL Winnipeg Jets. Since joining the team for its 2011-12 regular season, O'Neill has played in seven games, and has one goal and two assists for the Ice Caps.
Matt Mangene has been playing with the Adirondack Phantoms. Mangene continues to wear number 57 on the ice. The Adirondack Phantoms are the top affiliate for the NHL Philadelphia Flyers. Mangene has played in five of the Phantoms 2011-12 regular season games.
Ryan Hegarty signed with the Syracuse Crunch as a defensive player. The Syracuse Crunch is the primary affiliate for the NHL team the Anaheim Ducks. Hergarty wears number 40, though has yet to play in any of the Crunch's 2011-12 regular season games.
