Men's Ice Hockey Falls at Merrimack

NO. ANDOVER, Mass. -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team fell to Merrimack 6-0 on Saturday night at Lawler Arena in No. Andover, Mass. 

 

Merrimack jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 15:06 of the first period when Mike Collins beat Maine goalie Martin Ouellette (St.-Hippolyte, Quebec). Dan Kolomatis assisted on the play for the Warriors. 

 

Quinn Gould gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead at 19:13 of the first period. Collins carried the puck down the ice and passed to Gould in transition. He fired the puck past Ouellette from the slot for his fourth goal of the season. 

 

Merrimack made it a 3-0 lead just 1:58 into the second period when John Heffernan scored on a scramble in front of Maine goalie Ouellette. Shawn Bates assisted on the play for the Warriors. 

 

Vinny Scotti scored his third goal of the season at 6:11 of the second period as the Warriors extended their lead to 4-0. John Gustafsson and Toomey each added an assist on the goal. 

 

Collins added his second goal of the game on the power play at 18:40 of the second period to give Merrimack a 5-0 lead. Brendan Ellis and Kyle Bigos each assisted on the play. 

 

Ellis scored on the power play at 9:03 of the third period to extend the Merrimack lead to 6-0. Toomey and Bigos both assisted. 

 

Ouellette made 13 saves in 26:11. He falls to 3-6-3 on the season. He was replaced by Matt Morris (Ridgewood, N.J.) in the second period. Morris played 33:49 and made seven saves. 

 

Sam Marotta made 30 saves for the Warriors and improves to 5-4-2. 

 

Maine outshot Merrimack 30-26 in the game. Each team was whistled for 10 penalties for 20 minutes. 

 

Maine falls to 5-13-3 on the season and 1-8-3 in Hockey East play. Merrimack improves to 8-9-4 overall, 6-5-1 in conference play. 

 

Maine returns to action on Friday, Jan. 18 when its host Merrimack to start a two-game weekend series at Alfond Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM.
