Ouellette Stellar as Men's Ice Hockey Blanks UMass
AMHERST, Mass. -- Martin Ouellette (St.-Hippolyte, Quebec) recorded his third career shutout as the University of Maine men's ice hockey team blanked UMass 2-0 on Friday night at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. Ouellette stole the show for the Black Bears, making numerous outstanding saves en route to the victory.
With the game scoreless, Ouellette made probably his best save of the season, robbing a UMass player on the power play.
After a scoreless first period, Maine took a 1-0 lead at 14:14 of the second period. On the power play, Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) received a pass from Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) and fired a shot past UMass goalie Kevin Boyle from just inside the blueline. Jake Rutt (Scarborough, Maine) also assisted on the goal.
Maine extended its lead to 2-0 at 18:51 of the second period when Mark Anthoine (Lewiston, Maine) had his shot from the right wing beat Boyle in transition. Stu Higgins (Troy, Mich.) and Mike Cornell (Franklin, Mass.) each assisted on the goal for the Black Bears.
Maine outshot Massachusetts 32-30 in the game. The Black Bears were 1-for-4 on the power play, while UMass was scoreless in three chances.
Ouellette was outstanding for the Black Bears, making 30 saves. He improves to 7-9-6 on the season.
Boyle made 22 saves in 38:43 for the Minutemen. He suffered the loss and falls to 8-10-2. He was replaced by Steve Mastalerz who played the final 20:37.
The two teams finish their two-game weekend series on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7 PM at the Mullines Center.
