Maine Men's Hockey Picked Eighth in Hockey East Preseason Poll
BOSTON, Mass. -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team was selected to finish eighth in the 2013-2014 Hockey East Preseason Coaches Poll released on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Hockey East Media Day in Boston. The Black Bears received 45 points in the poll. 0
UMass Lowell and Boston College each received 104 points in the poll to tie for the top preseason honors. The River Hawks received seven first-place votes, while the Eagles earned the remaining four first place votes. New Hampshire and Hockey East newcomer Notre Dame each received 84 points in the poll to tie for third place. Providence was selected fifth with 79 points, while Boston University was sixth with 67 points and Merrimack was selected seventh with 54 points.
The Black Bears were followed by Vermont in ninth place with 34 points. Massachusetts was chosen 10th with 32 points. Northeastern rounded out the poll with 28 points in 11th place.
Maine returns 18 letterwinners from a year ago including four of its top five scorers. Among those returning are 2013 leading scorer Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario), who finished with six goals and 20 assists for 26 points last season. Also returning are Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario), who notched four goals and added 11 assists from the blueline for 15 points. Ryan Lomberg (Richmond Hill, Ontario) added seven goals and seven assists for 14 points, while Steven Swavely (Reading, Pa.) chipped in with 14 points on six goals and eight assists.
Maine returns its goaltending tandem in Martin Ouellette (St.-Hippolyte, Quebec) and Dan Sullivan (York, Pa.). Ouellette led the way for Maine a year ago with a record of 9-12-8 with a 2.42 goals against average and a .917 save percentage.
The Black Bears add 10 newcomers for the 2013-14 season, including several who are expected to have an immediate impact.
Maine opens the 2013-2014 season when it hosts Dalhousie at Sunday, Oct. 6. Season tickets are on sale now by calling the ticket office at 207-581-BEAR or 1-800-756-TEAM. Single game tickets go on sale on Thursday, Sept. 26.
