Maine Men's Ice Hockey Names Captains
ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team selected captains for the 2013-2014 season recently. Senior Brice O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) was named team captain, while senior Mark Anthoine (Lewiston, Maine) and Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) were named assistant captains.
O'Connor, a defenseman, has played in 70 career games for the Black Bears. He has three goals and 13 assists for 16 career points. As a sophomore he scored arguably two of the biggest goals of the season for Maine. He scored the lone goal of the game in the season finale against New Hampshire. The victory gave the Black Bears home ice in the 2012 Hockey East quarterfinals. He went on to score the game-winning goal in the third and final game of Maine's quarterfinal series with Merrimack which propelled the Black Bears to the Hockey East semifinals at the TD Garden. O'Connor has also excels in the classroom, as he has been named a Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner and also named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team.
Anthoine is a forward who enters the 2013-14 season having played in 93 straight games, the longest streak on the Maine team. He has seen action in 111 career games and has 17 goals and 13 assists for 30 points. As a sophomore, he tied for the national lead in power play goals with 11. Anthoine is the first captain from the state of Maine since Greg Moore during the 2005-06 season. He has also been named a Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner and named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team.
Shore led the team in scoring during his rookie season with six goals and 20 assists for 26 points. He became the first freshman to lead the team in scoring since Gustav Nyquist accomplished the feat during the 2008-09 season. In addition, he becomes the first sophomore captain since Jeff Mushaluk, a redshirt sophomore transfer from Lake Superior State University, wore the 'A' during the 2003–04 season. Shore is also outstanding in the classroom. He was named the co-recipient of the Hockey East Top Scholar-Athlete Award. He was named a Maine Scholar-Athlete *Rising Star*, named to the Hockey East Academic All-Star Team and the Hockey East All-Academic Team.
Maine opens the 2013-14 season with an exhibition contest against Dalhousie University on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 4 PM. The Black Bear open the regular season on Friday, Oct. 11 at St. Lawrence.
