Hutton, Ouellette Lead Men's Ice Hockey to 1-1 Draw at UMass
AMHERST, Mass. -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team skated to a 1-1 draw with UMass on Friday night at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. The Black Bears move to 3-2-1 on the season with the draw and 0-0-1 in Hockey East play. Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) scored the lone goal for the Black Bears.
Maine took a 1-0 lead at 3:35 of the second period. Connor Leen (Chester, N.Y.) got the puck up to Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) in the offensive zone. Shore got taken down by a UMass defender, but was able to get the puck over to Hutton, who fired it past UMass goalie Steve Mastalerz for his second goal of the season.
UMass tied the game on a goal by Conor Sheary at 17:28 of the second period. Ben Gallacher got the puck to Sheary, who carried it up the ice and fired it past Maine goalie Martin Ouellette (St.-Hippolyte, Quebec) from the left face-off circle to tie the game. For Sheary, it was his second goal of the season.
The two teams played through a scoreless third period and five minute overtime frame. Ouellette made some outstanding saves late for the Black Bears.
Massachusetts outshot Maine 32-27 in the game. The Black Bears were 1-for-5 on the power play, while UMass was scoreless in four chances.
Ouellette made 31 saves in goal for the Black Bears and moves to 3-2-1 on the season. Mastalerz stopped 26 shots for UMass and moves to 2-3-1.
The two teams return to action on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Mullins Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM.
