Shore Nets Goal, but Men's Ice Hockey Falls at UMass 2-1
AMHERST, Mass. -– The University of Maine men's ice hockey team saw its four game unbeaten streak snapped on Saturday night when it fell to UMass 2-1. Maine evens its record to 3-3-1 on the season and 0-1-1 in Hockey East play. UMass improves to 3-4-1 overall, 1-1-1 in conference action.
The two teams played through a scoreless first period. UMass struck first with a power play goal at 8:23 of the second period. Branden Gravel passed through the slot to Michael Pereira stationed to the left of Maine goalie Martin Ouellette (St.-Hippolyte, Quebec). Pereira one-timed the puck past Ouellette to give the Minutemen the 1-0 lead.
UMass added to its lead just 17 seconds later when Ray Pigozzi deflected the puck by Ouellette from the slot. Colin Shea assisted on the goal for the Minutemen.
Maine got on the board with a five-on-three goal at 6:11 of the third period. Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) carried it to the top of the circle before unleashing a quick shot that beat UMass goalie Steve Mastalerz. For Shore, it was his first goal of the season.
Maine continued to apply intense pressure the remainder of the period, but was unable to notch the equalizer.
Maine outshot UMass 39-26 in the game. The Black Bears were 1-for-7 on the power play, while UMass finished the game 1-for-3. Ouellette made 24 saves in goal and falls to 3-3-1 on the season. Mastalerz stopped 38 shots for the Minutemen and improves to 3-3-1.
Maine returns to action on Friday, Nov. 8 when it hosts Vermont at 7 PM at Alfond Arena.
