Men's Ice Hockey Falls at #3 Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Third-ranked Boston College scored three goals in the span of 1:38 in the second period en route to a 7-2 win over the Maine men's ice hockey team on Saturday night at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Maine falls to 11-8-3 on the season and 5-3-2 in Hockey East play. Boston College improves to 16-4-3 overall, 10-1-1 in conference play. 

 

Boston College took an early 1-0 lead just 1:10 into the game. Kevin Hayes skated the puck up the right wing and had a shot that Maine goalie Martin Ouellette (St.-Hippolte, Quebec) stopped, but Hayes was able to get control of the rebound and beat Ouellette for his 15th goal of the season. Johnny Gaudreau and Scott Savage each assisted on the goal for the Eagles. 

 

Maine tied the game at 19:59 of the first period. Dan Renouf (Pickering, Ontario) had a shot from the blueline that hit traffic in front of the goal. Both teams kept poking away at the puck, with Jon Swavely (Reading, Pa.) pushing the puck across the goal line with one second remaining in the period. It was second goal of the season and his team-leading fourth career goal against the Eagles. Eric Schurhamer (St. Paul, Minn.) also assisted on the goal for the Black Bears. Four of Swavely's six career goal have come against Boston College. 

 

BC regained the lead at 4:18 of the second period when Savage made a pass from the wall to Bill Arnold stationed just outside the crease. He one-timed the puck past Ouellette. Kevin Hayes also assisted on the goal. The Eagles extended their lead to 3-1 at 5:04 of the third period when Arnold beat Ouellette again, this time on the power play. 

 

Ian McCoshen made it a 4-1 lead less than a minute later from Patrick Brown and Ryan Fitzgerald. 

 

Maine added a power play goal at 18:40 of the second period. Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) found Devin Shore (Ajax ,Ontario) in the slot. His shot was stopped, but the rebound when right to Stu Higgins (Troy, Mich,) who fired the puck into the goal for his sixth goal of the season. 

 

BC added a power play goal by Patrick Brown just 1:16 into the third period to extend its lead to 5-2. BC made it a 6-2 when Kevin Hayes beat Maine goalie Dan Sullivan (York, Pa.) at 15:30 of the third period from Gaudreau and Thatcher Demko. The Eagles capped the scoring on a goal by Hayes at 17:47. 

 

Boston College outshot Maine 32-25 in the game. The Black Bears were 1-for-7 on the power play, while BC converted three of its seven chances. 

 

Maine goalie Martin Ouellette made 12 saves in 25:56 and suffered the loss. He fell to 10-8-3 on the season. Dan Sullivan replaced Ouellette and made 13 saves in 34:04. 

 

Thatcher Demko  made 23 saves and improves to 5-1-2. 

 

Maine returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 21 when it hosts New Brunswick at 7 PM at Alfond Arena.
