ORONO, Maine -- Former University of Maine men's ice hockey great Gustav Nyquist earned a Silver Medal on Sunday in the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Sochi, Russia as part of the Swedish Men's Ice Hockey Team. Sweden fell to Canada 3-0 in the Gold Medal game.
Nyquist becomes the fourth former Black Bear to earn an olympic medal, joining Paul Kariya (Canada, Silver in 1994, Gold in 2002), Jean-Yves Roy (Canada, Silver in 1994) and Mike Dunham (USA, Silver in 2002).
Nyquist, a two-time All-American and two-time Hobey Baker finalist, had Sweden's best scoring chance early in the first period when his shot beat Canadian goalie Carey Price, but deflected off the post and back to Price. Nyquist played 10:12 in the Gold Medal game on Sunday.
Nyquist was one of three former Black Bears to play in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, joining Jimmy Howard who played for Team USA and Matthias Trattnig who played for Austria.
