Dear Maine Hockey Fans,
I hope that this letter finds you well as we extend our greetings to all of you from the Hockey Office here at Alfond Arena. We have a very important weekend upcoming and I wanted to share some information about the significance of the series with Providence (2/28/14 & 3/1/14) and what lies beyond. As players and coaches, these are the weekends we dream of, that we live for.
The Hockey East playoff picture is as follows: Our team will finish the regular season Saturday night anywhere from second place to seventh place. This year all Hockey East teams qualify for the playoffs so a new playoff structure has been implemented. The teams that finish (1-5) in the league standings will have a bye for the first round. Teams finishing (6-11) will play a one game elimination at (6-7-8) the higher seeded school to advance to the quarterfinals. The four quarterfinal series' will be played at the schools that finished (1-4) during the regular season.
Clearly, these two games against Providence at the Alfond mean a great deal to our team, your team! Also, Saturday night we will be honoring our seniors, Mark Anthoine, Brice O'Connor, Martin Ouellette, Dan Sullivan, and Jon Swavely as part of Senior Night. These young men have provided you, the Maine fans, with many memorable moments throughout their careers. This year they have also shepherded our squad's resurgence not only with their play but also with the exemplary leadership they've provided for our young team. I've known these five for a relatively short time but in that time they have earned my deep respect as men, as students, and as hockey players.
We need your support this weekend by coming to the game to cheer on our team, your Maine Hockey Team. You all know how difficult it can be for opponents to play at a sold out Alfond Arena. You all know how much energy that you pass to our players with your voices, with your presence. You do make a difference, a big difference!
Finally, thank you for the support that you have already provided this season at home and on the road. Our players and our staff appreciate all of you beyond description. One of the biggest reasons prospects choose Maine is because of you, our fans. There is no venue and no fan base in all of College Hockey finer than the Alfond Arena and Maine fans. And so, I'm asking you to show up Friday and Saturday and I'm asking you to be loud and proud. We are Maine Hockey!
