Tenth Edition of Black Bears in the Pros

Maine hockey has numerous alumni excelling in various hockey leagues around the world. "Black Bears in the Pros", is taking a regular update at these players. Several Black Bears were also involved in trades last week.

 
 

National Hockey League

 

Ben Bishop – Bishop has won the starting job for the Tampa Bay Lightning in goal and continues his impressive season for the Lightning. He is 29-11-5. He has a 2.08 goals against average and a .930 save percentage. He ranks third in the NHL in save percentage (.930), tied for third in shutouts (4), fourth in goals against average (2.05).

 

Brian Flynn – Flynn has played in 62 games this season for the Buffalo Sabres. He has six goals and five assists for 11 points. His 62 games played are tied for the most on the team.  

 

Jimmy Howard – Howard has started 38 games in goal for the Detroit Red Wings. He is 13-15-20 with a 2.65 goals against average and a .913 save percentage. He has a pair of shutouts on the season.

 

Gustav Nyquist – Nyquist has played in 39 games for the Detroit Red Wings and has 16 goals and 16 assists for 32 points, which ranks sixth on the team in scoring He had his first career hat trick on Feb. 2 at Washington in a game televised nationally. He won a silver medal with Team Sweden at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. On March 7, Nyquist had a goal and three assists in Detroit's win over New Jersey.

 

Dustin Penner – Penner began the season playing for the Anaheim Ducks, the top team in the west. In 49 games, he ranked tied for sixth on the team in scoring with 13 goals and 19 assists for 32 points. He was traded to the Washington Capitals at the trade deadline and has seen action in three games for the Caps.

 

Teddy Purcell – Purcell ranks tied for fifth on the Tampa Bay Lightning in scoring with 10 goals and 26 assists for 36 points in 64 games.  

 

Jack Capuano – Capuano is head coach of the New York Islanders. The team has a record of 24-33-9.

 

Bob Corkum – Corkum works in player development for the New York Islanders.

 
 

Mike Dunham – Dunham is the goaltending coach for the New York Islanders.

 

Dave Nonis – General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team is 34-23-8 on the season.

Guy Perron – Works as a scout for the Colorado Avalanche.

 

Garth Snow – Snow is serving as the General Manager of the New York Islanders.

 

John Tortorella  Tortorella is head coach of the Vancouver Canucks. The team has a record of 29-27-10 on the season.

 

AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE

 

Spencer Abbott – Made his NHL debut against Ottawa on Oct. 5. The rest of his action this season has come with the Toronto Marlies. Abbott leads the Marlies in scoring with 14 goals and 48 assists for 62 points. He is a +12. Abbott ranks fourth in the AHL in scoring this season.   

 

Mike Cornell – Cornell is playing with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Cornell has four goals and six assists for 10 points in 35 games. Earlier this year he played for the Florida Everblades. He saw action in 12 games and has a goal and five assists.

 

Scott Darling – Darling has played in 18 games for the Milwaukee Admirals. He is 8-4-1 with a 2.10 goals against average and a .931 save percentage. He has four shutouts.  

 

Joey Diamond – Diamond has seven goals and five assist for 12 points with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in 35 games.

 

Doug Janik – Janik has played for San Antonio and Chicago this year. He played in 13 games for San Antonio and had a goal and seven assists for eight points. He has played in two games for the Chicago Wolves.  

 

Matt Mangene - Mangene was playing for the Adirondack Phantoms. He had three goals and three assists for six points in 51 games. He was recently traded to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and has seen action in one game for them.

 

Will O'Neill – O'Neill has played in 53 games for the St. John's Ice Caps and has seven goals and 19 assists for 26 points.

 

Scott Pellerin – Pellerin is head coach of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL.

 

EAST COAST HOCKEY LEAGUE

 
 

Mike Banwell – Banwell played a pair of games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He has played in 49 games for the Reading Royals and has two goal and 12 assists for 14 points.

 

Rob Bellamy – Bellamy has played in 54 games for the Elmira Jackals and ranks fourth on the team in scoring with 14 goals and 17 assists for 32 points.

 

Simon Danis-Pepin – Has five goal and 13 assists for 18 points in 45 games for the Ft. Wayne Komets.

 

David deKastrozza  – Has 11 goals and 19 assists for 30 points in 56 games for the Idaho Steelheads.

 

Ryan Hegarty – Hegarty has played in 46 games for the Greenville Road Warriors and has two goals and 15 assists for 17 points.

 

Mark Nemec – Nemec has played in 55 games for the Colorado Eagles. He has four goals and 10 assists for 14 points. He leads the team in +/- with a +33

 

CENTRAL HOCKEY LEAGUE

 

Matt Duffy – Duffy is playing for the Quad City Mallards. He has nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points in 53 games. 

 

EUROPEAN / CANADIAN/ ASIA LEAGUE

 

Derek Damon – Damon is playing for HC Thurgau in Switzerland. In 45 games he has 22 goals and 38 assists for 60 points. He has seen action in four playoff games for Thurgau.

 

Robby Dee – Dee played for Riessersee SC, a professional team in Germany. He had four goals and six assists for 10 points in 23 games. He is now playing for Stjernen in Norway. He has played in six games and has two and four assists for six points.

 

Jeff Dimmen – Dimmen is playing for Anyang of the Asia Hockey League. He has 11 goals and 40 assists for 51 points in 42 games.

 

Frank Doyle – Playing for the Sheffield Steelers in the Elite Ice Hockey League in England.  In 60 games he has a record of 35-22-0 with a 2.72 GAA abd a .901 save percentage. He has a pair of shutouts. 

 

Greg Moore – Moore is playing for the EHC Wolfsburg Grizzly Adams in Germany. Has played in two games this season and is recovering from an injury.

 

Michel Léveillé – Leveille is playing for the Cool FM 103,5 de Saint-Georges of the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey. He has 15 goals and 18 assists for 33 points in 28 games.

 

Mike Lundin – Lundin is playing for Barys Astana of the Kontinental Hockey League in Russia. He has five goals and 19 assists for 24 points in 53 games. He has a goal and an assist in two playoff games.

 

Alfie Michaud – Michaud is playing for SonderjyskE in the top Danish league.  He has a 2.06 goals against average and a .914 save percentage. He two playoff games, he has posted a 0.48 goals against average and a .977 save percentage.

 

Josh Soares – Soares was playing for IK Oskarshamn in Sweden. He had three goals and seven assists for 10 points in 26 games. He is now playing for the Graz 99ers in Austria. He has five goals and six assists for 11 points in 12 games.

 

Travis Ramsey – Ramsey is playing for the Ritten-Renon in the Italian Elite A where he is serving as a captain. He has one goal and nine assists in 34 games this season.

 

Colin Shields – Shields is playing in the UK Elite League in Belfast. He has 21 goals and 36 assists for 57 points in 53 games.

 

Matthias Trattnig – Trattnig is playing for EC Salzburg. He has one goal and 11 assists for 12 points in 20 games. He has played on two playoff games. He competed for Austria in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

 

Jean-Yves Roy, who played for the Black Bears and saw some time in the NHL in the late 1990's, is currently a Division I official.

 

Todd Bjorkstrand, who played in the mid 1980's, is coach and general manager of a Danish professional team.

 

Barrett Heisten is currently an assistant coach at the University of Alaska. Former Maine assistant coach Matt Thomas is the head coach at UAA.

 

John Ronan is an assistant coach at Union College. The Dutchmen are ranked third in both national polls with a record of 24-6-4. 

 

Travis Wight is an assistant coach with the Wichita Thunder of the Central Hockey League.
