Men's Ice Hockey Falls in Hockey East Quarterfinals to Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) and Steven Swavely (Reading, Pa.) each had goals, but the University of Maine men's ice hockey team dropped its Hockey East quarterfinal series to Providence after falling 4-2 in game two on Saturday night. Martin Ouellette (St.-Hippolyte, Quebec) set the school record for saves in a season in the game as he finished the year with 926.
Maine ends the season with a mark of 16-15-4, while Providence improves to 21-9-6.
Maine opened the scoring with a power play goal by Ben Hutton at 3:18 of the first period. He received a pass from Brice O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) on the of the face-off circle and fired a shot past Friar netminder Jon Gillies. Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) also assisted on the goal.
Providence tied the game at 1-1 at 11:20 of the opening frame. Nick Saracino scored his seventh goal of the season in traffic in front of the Maine goal. Steven Shemanski and Shane Luke each assisted on the goal for the Friars.
The Friars took the lead at 15:01 when Saracino scored his second goal of the period, this time on the power play. Trevor Mingoia and Steven Shemanski each assisted on the goal for the Friars.
Providence made it a 3-1 lead at 8:31 of the second period when Derek Army had the puck behind the net. He faked going one way, then snuck the puck between Ouellette's right skate and the goal post.
Providence notched a power play goal at 15:36 of the second period to extend its lead to 4-1. Ross Mauermann received the puck from Trevor Mingoia and fired a shot that ricocheted in off the post.
Maine cut the lead to two goals at 2:45 of the third period. Brice O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) had a shot that Gillies was able to save, but the rebound went right to Steven Swavely (Reading, Pa.) who fired it into the net. Devin Shore also assisted on the play.
The Black Bears outshot the Friars 38-30 in the game, including 16-4 in the third period. Maine was 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Friars converted two of their eight chances.
Ouellette made 18 saves in the game for the Black Bears in 43:19. He falls to 15-15-4. Dan Sullivan (York, Pa.) stopped eight shots in 14:10.
Gillies made 36 saves in goal for the Friars and improves to 18-7-5.
