Twelfth Edition of Black Bears In The Pros

Maine hockey has numerous alumni excelling in various hockey leagues around the world. "Black Bears in the Pros", is taking a regular update at these players. Here is the 12th edition of Black Bears in the Pros. 

 

This week we highlight Gustav Nyquist again, who has been the National Hockey League's hottest scorer over the past month. After receiving the NHL's First Star a week ago, he continued his hot play this past week. In 50 games, Nyquist ranks tied for second on the Detroit Red Wings in scoring with a team-high 27 goals and 18 assists for 45 points. He has scored goals in eight of his last nine games and has a nine game points scoring streak. On Sunday, Nyquist scored an unbelievable goal against the Tampa Bay Lightning, which has garnered national attention. 

 
 

National Hockey League

 

Ben Bishop – Bishop is having a record-setting year for the Tampa Bay Lightning. He is 36-12-7. He has a 2.18 goals against average and a .926 save percentage.  He set the Lightning record for wins in a season with his 31st on March 15 vs. New Jersey. He ranks tied for second in the NHL in both wins (36) and shutouts (5) and tied for fifth in save percentage (.926).

 

Brian Flynn – Flynn has played in 72 games this season for the Buffalo Sabres, which is tied for the team lead. He has six goals and seven assists for 13 points.

 

Jimmy Howard – Howard has started 46 games in goal for the Detroit Red Wings. He is 18-18-11 with a 2.71 goals against average and a .909 save percentage. He has a pair of shutouts on the season.

 

Gustav Nyquist – Nyquist has played in 50 games for the Detroit Red Wings and has 27 goals and 18 assists for 45 points, which ranks tied for second on the team in scoring. He is currently in the midst of a nine-game points scoring streak for the Red Wings. He has 11 goals over those nine games.  

 

Dustin Penner – Penner began the season playing for the Anaheim Ducks, the top team in the west. In 49 games, he ranked tied for sixth on the team in scoring with 13 goals and 19 assists for 32 points. He was traded to the Washington Capitals at the trade deadline and has seen action in 13 games for the Caps and has a goal and two assists for three points.

 

Teddy Purcell – Purcell ranks fifth on the Tampa Bay Lightning in scoring with 12 goals and 30 assists for 42 points in 75 games.  

 

Jack Capuano – Capuano is head coach of the New York Islanders. The team has a record of 29-35-10.

 

Bob Corkum – Corkum works in player development for the New York Islanders.

 

Mike Dunham – Dunham is the goaltending coach for the New York Islanders.

 

Dave Nonis – General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The team is 36-32-8 on the season.

Guy Perron – Works as a scout for the Colorado Avalanche.

 

Garth Snow – Snow is serving as the General Manager of the New York Islanders.

 

John Tortorella  -  Tortorella is head coach of the Vancouver Canucks. The team has a record of 34-31-11 on the season.

 

AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE

 

Spencer Abbott – Made his NHL debut against Ottawa on Oct. 5. The rest of his action this season has come with the Toronto Marlies. Abbott leads the Marlies in scoring with 17 goals and 52 assists for 69 points. He is a +10. Abbott leads the American Hockey League in assists and ranks second in the league in scoring.

 

Scott Darling – Darling has played in 21 games for the Milwaukee Admirals. He is 10-4-2 with a 2.07 goals against average and a .931 save percentage. He has four shutouts.  

 

Doug Janik – Janik has played for San Antonio and Chicago this year. He played in 13 games for San Antonio and had a goal and seven assists for eight points. He has played in seven games for the Chicago Wolves and has one goal and three assists for four points.

 

Matt Mangene - Mangene was playing for the Adirondack Phantoms. He had three goals and three assists for six points in 51 games. He was recently traded to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and has seen action in nine games for them. He was recently assigned to the Stockton Thunder.

 

Will O'Neill – O'Neill has played in 62 games for the St. John's Ice Caps and has eight goals and 25 assists for 33 points.

 

Scott Pellerin – Pellerin is head coach of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL.

 

EAST COAST HOCKEY LEAGUE

 
 

Mark Anthoine – Anthoine is playing for the Evansville Icemen. He has played in one game.

 

Mike Banwell – Banwell played a pair of games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He has played in 57 games for the Reading Royals and has two goal and 13 assists for 15 points.

 

Rob Bellamy – Bellamy has played in 63 games for the Elmira Jackals and ranks tied for third on the team in scoring with 15 goals and 20 assists for 35 points.

 

Mike Cornell – Cornell has split time between the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and the Florida Everblades. Cornell had four goals and six assists for 10 points in 35 games for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He is currently in his second stint with the Florida Everblades. He has two goals and 10 assists for 12 points in 29 games.

 

Simon Danis-Pepin – Has five goal and 19 assists for 24 points in 54 games for the Ft. Wayne Komets.

 

David deKastrozza  – Has 13 goals and 23 assists for 36 points in 64 games for the Idaho Steelheads.

 

Joey Diamond – Diamond has seven goals and five assist for 12 points with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in 35 games. He is currently playing with the Stockton Thunder. He has six assists in seven games.

 

Ryan Hegarty – Hegarty has played in 54 games for the Greenville Road Warriors and has three goals and 18 assists for 21 points.

 

Mark Nemec – Nemec has played in 57 games for the Colorado Eagles. He has four goals and 10 assists for 14 points. He leads the team in +/- with a +33

 

Brice O'Connor recently signed an ATO with the Stockton Thunder. He has played in six games and has an assist.

 

CENTRAL HOCKEY LEAGUE

 

Matt Duffy – Duffy is playing for the Quad City Mallards. He has 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points in 65 games. 

 

EUROPEAN / CANADIAN/ ASIA LEAGUE

 

Troy Barnes -  Barnes is playing in Austria for Kaltern/Caldaro. He has five goals and 26 assists for 31 points in 36 games. He has one assist in one playoff game.

 

Derek Damon – Damon is playing for HC Thurgau in Switzerland. In 45 games he has 22 goals and 38 assists for 60 points. He has seen action in four playoff games for Thurgau.

 

Robby Dee – Dee played for Riessersee SC, a professional team in Germany. He had four goals and six assists for 10 points in 23 games. He is now playing for Stjernen in Norway. He has played in six games and has two and four assists for six points.

 

Jeff Dimmen – Dimmen is playing for Anyang of the Asia Hockey League. He has 11 goals and 40 assists for 51 points in 42 games.

 

Frank Doyle – Playing for the Sheffield Steelers in the Elite Ice Hockey League in England.  In 64 games he has a record of 38-23-0 with a 2.66 GAA and a .902 save percentage. He has a pair of shutouts. 

 

Greg Moore – Moore is playing for the EHC Wolfsburg Grizzly Adams in Germany. Has played in two games this season and is recovering from an injury.

 

Michel Léveillé – Leveille is playing for the Cool FM 103,5 de Saint-Georges of the Ligue Nord-Américaine de Hockey. He has 17 goals and 23 assists for 40 points in 30 games to lead his team in scoring,

 

Mike Lundin – Lundin is playing for Barys Astana of the Kontinental Hockey League in Russia. He has five goals and 19 assists for 24 points in 53 games. He has two goals and two assists in eight playoff games.

 

Alfie Michaud – Michaud is playing for SonderjyskE in the top Danish league.  He has a 2.06 goals against average and a .914 save percentage in 32 games. He eight playoff games, he has posted a 1.23 goals against average and a .933 save percentage.

 

Josh Soares – Soares was playing for IK Oskarshamn in Sweden. He had three goals and seven assists for 10 points in 26 games. He is now playing for the Graz 99ers in Austria. He has five goals and six assists for 11 points in 12 games.

 

Travis Ramsey – Ramsey is playing for the Ritten-Renon in the Italian Elite A where he is serving as a captain. He has two goals and 13 assists for 15 points in 41 games this season. In four playoff games he has four assists.

 

Colin Shields – Shields is playing in the UK Elite League in Belfast. He has 22 goals and 39 assists for 61 points in 59 games as an alternate captain. He has two goals and an assist in two playoff games.

 

Matthias Trattnig – Trattnig is playing for EC Salzburg. He has one goal and 11 assists for 12 points in 20 games. He has played on six playoff games with a goal. He competed for Austria in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

 

Jean-Yves Roy, who played for the Black Bears and saw some time in the NHL in the late 1990's, is currently a Division I official.

 

Todd Bjorkstrand, who played in the mid 1980's, is coach and general manager of a Danish professional team.

 

Barrett Heisten is currently an assistant coach at the University of Alaska. Former Maine assistant coach Matt Thomas is the head coach at UAA.

 

Dave MacIsaac – MacIsaac is head coach of the Icelandic National Team.

 

Ben Murphy – Murphy recently completed his fifth season as an assistant coach at Bentley College.

 

John Ronan is an assistant coach at Union College. The Dutchmen are 28-6-4 on the season. The team defeated Vermont and Providence last weekend in the Northeast Regional to advance to the Frozen Four in Philadelphia.

 

Travis Wight is an assistant coach with the Wichita Thunder of the Central Hockey League.
