O'Neill and Nyquist Remain in the Headlines
ORONO, Maine -- Hockey season may be over for most, but a duo of former Black Bears remain in the news. Will O'Neill (Salem, Mass.) is currently playing for the Calder Cup, awarded to the champions of the AHL. Gustav Nyquist (Malmo, Sweden) is a finalists for the TSN Play of the Year.
O'Neill plays for the St. John's Icecaps who are currently playing the Texas Stars in the AHL Finals. Texas won the first game which was played on Sunday night. O'Neill had a goal for the Icecaps in the game. Game two is slated for Monday, June 9. In 14 playoff games this season, O'Neill, a defenseman, ranks second on the Icecaps in scoring with three goals and 11 assist for 14 points. He tallied nine goals and 26 assists for 35 points in 68 regular season games this year. The Icecaps are the AHL affiliate of the Winnipeg Jets.
Nyquist is up for a fan vote in TSN Play-of-the-Year. The goal that he scored came against former Black Bear goalie Ben Bishop. He played in 57 games and scored 28 goals and added 20 assists for 48 points. He also played for Sweden in the 2014 Winter Olympics.
