ORONO, Maine -- Are you ready for the 2014-15 men's ice hockey season? Do you have your season tickets? If not, you are in luck! The University of Maine will hold its annual men's ice hockey select-a-seat night on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 6 PM at Alfond Arena. Season tickets are $355 and $385 depending upon type and location.

Shawn Walsh Memorial Golf Classic a Huge Success
Recently, the Frank Jordan led committee for the Shawn Walsh Memorial Golf Classic staged an absolutely magnificent event at the Martindale Golf Club in Auburn, Maine. The committee, with the assistance of the Friends of Maine Hockey, raised a significant sum to benefit the University of Maine Black Bear Hockey Team.

The Friends of Maine Hockey will be hosting "LobsterFest" on Sunday, Sept. 28 at McLaughlin's at the Marina in Hampden. All proceeds will go to support the University of Maine Men's Ice Hockey program.

Men's Ice Hockey Adds Seven For 2014-15 Season
ORONO, Maine-- University of Maine men’s ice hockey coach Red Gendron announced today that his program has received seven commitments for the 2014–2015 season. Malcolm Hayes (Atlanta, Georgia/Cushing Academy), Mark Hamilton (Winthrop, Massachusetts/Vernon Vipers), Cedric Lacroix (Shefford, Quebec/Sioux City Musketeers), Jack Musil (Hull, England / New England Wolves), Liam Pecararo (Canton, Massachusetts/Waterloo Blackhawks), Sean Romeo (Cary, North Carolina/Youngstown Phantoms) and Nolan Vesey (North Reading, Massachusetts/South Shore Kings) will join the Black Bears in the fall of 2014.

Vesey Selected in 2014 NHL Draft
ORONO, Maine -- University of Maine men's ice hockey incoming freshman Nolan Vesey (North Reading, Massachusetts) has been selected in the 2014 NHL Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Vesey was chosen in the sixth round, 158th overall.

Schurhamer, O'Connor and Jon Swavely Highlight Hockey East All-Academic Selections
WAKEFIELD, Massachusetts --The University of Maine had 16 student-athletes named to the 2013–2014 Men’s Hockey East All-Academic Team announced on Friday. Each of the student-athletes had a grade point average of 3.0 or better in each of the two academic periods in which he was competing. Rookie Eric Schurhamer (St. Paul, Minnesota) was named to the Hockey East Academic All-Star Team, which honors the top grade point averages by position. Brice O’Connor (Londonderry, New Hampshire) and Jon Swavely (Reading, Pennsylvania) were named “Distinguished Scholars” for having been named to the All-Academic Team in each of their four years at Maine.

Shawn Walsh Memorial Golf Tournament Set for July 21
The 12th annual Shawn Walsh Memorial Golf Classic will tee off on Monday, July 21 at Martindale Country Club in Auburn. Registration beings at 8:15 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. The banquet and auction starts at 3:00 p.m. This special event is held in memory of Coach Shawn Walsh and it provides an opportunity to support the program he cherished and was so dedicated to. Shawn’s determination and loyalty to the program is what “drives” this tournament every year as it continues the Maine Hockey tradition.

ORONO, Maine -- University of Maine sophomore forward Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 2013-2014 Men's At-Large First Team on Thursday, May 15. Shore is a sophomore finance major with a nearly perfect grade point average.

Ben Hutton and Devin Shore Named CCM Hockey Division I All-Americans
ORONO, Maine -- University of Maine standouts Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) and Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) were named CCM Hockey Division I All-Americans on Friday. Both were named to the 2013-14 AHCA/CCM Hockey Men’s Division I All-America Second Team. The honors are just the recent in a long list of honors for the two sophomores.

Ben Hutton Earns Bob Monahan Award for Best Defenseman in New England
BOSTON, Mass. -- The honors continue for University of Maine men’s ice hockey standouts Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) and Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario). On Wednesday, Hutton was named the recipient of the Bob Monahan Award, presented annually to the top defenseman in New England. Hutton, along with classmate Shore, each earned a spot on the 2013-2014 New England Hockey Writers Association Division I All-Star Team.

ORONO, Maine – Former University of Maine men’s ice hockey players Mark Anthoine (Lewiston, Maine), Brice O’Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) and Jon Swavely (Reading, Pa.) have signed Amateur Tryout Contracts. Anthoine signed with the Evansville Icemen, while O’Connor signed with the Stockton Thunder and Swavely the Reading Royals.

Ben Hutton and Devin Shore Named to Hockey East First Team
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- University of Maine sophomore standouts Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) and Devin Shore (Ajax, Ontario) were both named to the 2014 Hockey East First Team, announced on Thursday night at the Hockey East Awards banquet. Maine and Boston College were the lone schools to have more than one person named to the Hockey East First Team.

Men's Ice Hockey Falls in Hockey East Quarterfinals to Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) and Steven Swavely (Reading, Pa.) each had goals, but the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team dropped its Hockey East quarterfinal series to Providence after falling 4-2 in game two on Saturday night. Martin Ouellette (St.-Hippolyte, Quebec) set the school record for saves in a season in the game as he finished the year with 926.

Men's Ice Hockey Drops Game One at Providence 3-1
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to Providence in the first game of the 2014 Hockey East quarterfinal series between the two teams non Friday night at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. Maine falls to 16-14-4 on the season with the loss, while the Friars improve to 20-9-6. Ben Hutton (Prescott, Ontario) scored Maine’s lone goal and in the process set the school record for goals in a season by a defenseman with his 14th.

The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team travels to Providence College for a best-of-three Hockey East quarterfinal series March 14, 15 and 16 (if necessary). The Black Bears advanced to the Hockey East quarterfinals after defeating Merrimack 2-0 in the Hockey East opening round game on Sat., March 8. Providence finished as the third seed in the 2014 Hockey East regular season standings and received an opening round bye. Maine enters play this weekend with a record of 16-13-4, while Providence is 19-9-6.

ORONO, Maine -- Martin Ouellette (St.-Hippolyte, Quebec) made 29 saves, including one at point blank range with 30 seconds remaining, as the University of Maine men's ice hockey team defeated Merrimack 2-0 in the Hockey East opening round on Saturday night at Alfond Arena. Maine advances to the Hockey East quarterfinals and will travel to Providence for a best-of-three series next weekend.

The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team hosts Providence College this weekend in the final games of the 2014 regular season. It is a huge weekend series for the two teams as both are fighting for playoff position. Maine enters play this weekend with a record of 15-11-4 overall, 9-6-3 in Hockey East play. Providence is 17-9-6 on the season and 9-7-2 in conference action. ORONO, Maine -- Former University of Maine men's ice hockey great Gustav Nyquist earned a Silver Medal on Sunday in the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Sochi, Russia as part of the Swedish Men's Ice Hockey Team. Sweden fell to Canada 3-0 in the Gold Medal game.

BOSTON, Mass. -- The 15th ranked University of Maine men’s ice hockey team battled to a 4-4 draw with ninth-ranked Northeastern on Friday night at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass. Mark Anthoine (Lewiston, Maine) scored at 13:57 of the third period to give Maine a 4-3 lead, but the Huskies knotted the score with 1:11 remaining and that is how the game ended. Maine moves to 15-10-4 on the season and 9-5-3 in Hockey East play, while Northeastern moves to 17-10-4, 9-6-2 in conference action.

Maine Honors Over Half of Student-Athletes for Academic Achievement
ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine announced on Friday that 261 student-athletes will be honored and recognized for their success in the classroom at the Scholar-Athlete Recognition ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014. One-hundred ninety five student-athletes will be recognized as Scholar-Athletes for achieving a 3.0 or better grade point average for the 2013 year and/or having a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Sixty-six first-year student-athletes will also be honored as *Rising Stars* for earning a 3.0 GPA or better in their first semester at Maine. The Scholar-Athletes and *Rising Stars* total 261.

The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team travels to Northeastern this weekend for a Hockey East showdown with the Huskies. The Black Bears swept a weekend series against Merrimack last weekend winning 2-1 on Friday and 3-2 on Saturday. Maine enters play this weekend with a record of 15-10-3 overall, 9-5-2 in Hockey East play. Northeastern is 17-10-3 overall, 9-6-1 in conference play after defeating UMass 5-4 in its lone game last weekend.

Martin Ouellette Named Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week
ORONO, Maine -- University of Maine men's ice hockey goalie Martin Ouellette (St.-Hippolyte, Quebec) was named the Hockey East Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. It is the second time this season that Ouellette has earned the honor. He was also named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Dec. 31, 2013.

WAKEFIELD, Mass. --Maine had 17 student-athletes named to the Hockey East 2012–2013 All-Academic Team announced recently. Each of the student-athletes had a grade point average of 3.0 or better in each of the two academic periods in which he was competing. UMaine Names Bob Corkum Interim Head Coach of Men's Ice Hockey
Robert Corkum today was named interim head coach of University of Maine men's ice hockey by UMaine Director of Athletics Steve Abbott. Corkum replaces Tim Whitehead, who was released from his contract April 9. A formal national search for a permanent men's ice hockey coach will begin immediately with the formation of a search committee. Corkum, a UMaine alumnus, has been an associate head coach with the university's men's ice hockey program since 2008.

University of Maine President Paul Ferguson has announced that the University will buy out the last year of Coach Tim Whitehead's contract, ending his appointment as head coach after 11 seasons. The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team returns to action this weekend after winning the 2012 Florida College Classic Championship last weekend. The Black Bears defeated #11 Cornell 6-4 in the title game. Maine is 4-11-2 on the season. Mercyhurst enters play this weekend with a mark of 8-6-1. The Lakers are coming off a 3-2 win in overtime against Canisius on Dec. 18. Friday’s game against Mercyhurst will be played at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine.

Matt Morris Named Pro Ambitions Co-Rookie of the Week
University of Maine men's ice hockey freshman Matt Morris (Ridgewood, N.J.) was named the Pro Ambitions Hockey East Co-Rookie of the Week on Wednesday, Jan. 2. Morris stopped 22 of the 23 shots that he faced in 49:27 in Maine's 6-4 win over #11 Cornell in the 2012 Florida College Classic Championship game. In addition, Morris was named the Florida College Classic Most Outstanding Goaltender.

Black Bears Win 2012 Florida College Classic 6-4 Over #11 Cornell
The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team defeated #11 Cornell 6-4 on Saturday night to win the 2012 Florida College Classic Championship. Maine defends its title as the Black Bears also took the crown in 2011. Kyle Beattie (Avondale, Ariz.) was named tournament Most Valuable Player as he had a goal and two assists in the title game. Maine becomes the first team to ever win back-to-back titles in the 13 year of the tournament.

The Terriers, who are 9-5-0 on the season and 7-4-0 in conference play, defeated #1 New Hampshire 3-2 on Thursday night. Former University of Maine men's ice hockey standout Spencer Abbott (Hamilton, Ontario) has signed a one-year entry level free agent contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, it was announced Wednesday by Brian Burke, President and General Manager. Abbott has also signed an amateur tryout contract with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League and will join the Marlies for the remainder of the regular season and Calder Cup playoffs.

Spencer Abbott (Hamilton, Ontario) was named the Leonard Fowle Most Valuable Player and received the Herb Gallagher Award for the Best Forward. Maine Honors Scholar-Athletes for Academic Achievement
The University of Maine announced on Thursday that 250 student-athletes will be honored and recognized for their success in the classroom at the Scholar-Athlete Recognition ceremony on Monday, March 25, 2013. One-hundred sixty five student-athletes will be recognized as Scholar-Athletes for achieving a 3.0 or better grade point average for the 2012 year and/or having a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Eighty-five first-year student-athletes will also be honored as *Rising Stars* for earning a 3.0 or better in their first semester at Maine. The Scholar-Athletes and *Rising Stars* total 250, over half of the student-athletes at the University of Maine.

ESTERO, Fla. -- Spencer Abbott (Hamilton, Ontario) won the Shawn Walsh Memorial Most Valuable Player Award as the University of Maine won its fifth Florida College Classic on Friday night in Estero, Fla. with a 5-2 win over UMass. Abbott had a goal and five assists in the tournament. Brian Flynn (Lynnfield, Mass.), Will O’Neill (Salem, Mass.) and Dan Sullivan (York, Pa.) were all named to the Florida College Classic All-Tournament Team.

The University of Maine men's ice hockey team will face the Orono Police Department in the second installment of Blue on Blue Softball Saturday, Sept. 17. The Boston Red Sox, Fenway Sports Management (FSM) and the Hockey East Association announced today that tickets for the January 7th Hockey East doubleheader will go on sale to the general public beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, September 13 at noon. The outdoor men’s college hockey doubleheader will feature the University of Vermont (UVM) Catamounts against the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Minutemen at 4:00 p.m., and the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Wildcats against the University of Maine (UMaine) Black Bears at 7:30 p.m. The back-to-back college hockey games are part of Frozen Fenway 2012, a two week series of ice events at Fenway Park.

Gustav Nyquist Signs with Detroit Red Wings
University of Maine junior standout Gustav Nyquist (Malmo, Sweden) has signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League. Nyquist was a fourth round draft choice, 122nd overall in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He will now join the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. By signing with the Red Wings, Nyquist forgoes his senior season at Maine.

Former University of Maine men’s ice hockey seniors Josh Van Dyk (Woodstock, Ontario) and Mike Banwell (Scarborough, Ontario) have signed professional contracts. Van Dyk signed an amateur tryout with the Abbotsford Heat, the AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, while Banwell signed an ATO with the Albany Devils, the AHL affiliate of the New Jersey Devils. Both traveled to meet up with their new teams on Thursday.

Maine Honors Scholar-Athletes for Academic Achievement
he University of Maine announced on Wednesday that 239 student-athletes will be honored and recognized for their success in the classroom at the Scholar-Athlete Recognition ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011. One-hundred seventy four student-athletes will be recognized as Scholar-Athletes for achieving a 3.0 or better grade point average for the 2010 year and/or having a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Sixty-five first-year student-athletes will also be honored as *Rising Stars* for earning a 3.0 or better in their first semester at Maine. The Scholar-Athletes and *Rising Stars* total 239, over half of the student-athletes at the University of Maine.

The #6 University of Maine men's ice hockey team will host arch-rival #3 New Hampshire on Friday night at 7:30 PM in a game that will be televised nationally on CBS College Sports Network. Students started lining up at 9 PM on Thursday night in preparation of the game. It was a cold night in Orono as temperatures approached zero and were still in single digits at 9 AM. The fifth-ranked University of Maine men’s ice hockey team completed its weekend sweep of Northeastern with a 4-2 win over the Huskies on Saturday night at Alfond Arena. University of Maine men's ice hockey sophomore forward Gustav Nyquist (Malmo, Sweden) was named to the RBK Hockey/AHCA Men's Division I All-America First Team on Friday, April 9. It was just one of many honors that the standout has received in the past several weeks. The All-American teams were announced following the 2010 presentation of the Hobey Baker Memorial Award.
