Higgins Lifts Maine Past Alabama-Huntsville in Overtime

Stu Higgins (Troy, Mich.) scored 59 seconds into overtime as the University of Maine men’s ice hockey team overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat Alabama-Huntsville on Friday night at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears improve to 15-8-3 on the season with the win. Spencer Abbott (Hamilton, Ontario) had a goal and two assists for the Black Bears in the game.

The University of Maine men's ice hockey team, ranked 15th in the nation in each of the national polls, will host Alabama-Huntsville for a non-conference series on Friday and Saturday. The Black Bears are 14-8-3 on the season and coming off back-to-back sweeps of #3 Boston College and #2 Boston University. Maine has won 11 of its last 14 games.

The University of Maine men’s ice hockey team looks to keep its winning ways going when it hosts Alabama-Huntsville in the final non-conference games of the season. The Black Bears, coming off back-to-back sweeps of #3 Boston College and #2 Boston University, are 14-8-3 on the season and 11-7-2 in Hockey East play. Alabama-Huntsville, a Division I independent, is 2-24-1 on the season.
Maine Honors Scholar-Athletes for Academic Achievement

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine announced on Wednesday that 243 student-athletes will be honored and recognized for their success in the classroom at the Scholar-Athlete Recognition ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012. One-hundred seventy five student-athletes will be recognized as Scholar-Athletes for achieving a 3.0 or better grade point average for the 2011 year and/or having a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Sixty-eight first-year student-athletes will also be honored as *Rising Stars* for earning a 3.0 or better in their first semester at Maine. The Scholar-Athletes and *Rising Stars* total 243, over half of the student-athletes at the University of Maine.
Joey Diamond Named Athletic Republic Hockey East Player of the Month for January

University of Maine men's ice hockey junior forward Joey Diamond (Long Beach, N.Y.) was named the Athletic Republic Hockey East Player of the Month for January on Tuesday, Feb. 1. It is the second straight month that a Black Bears has earned the honor, as Spencer Abbott (Hamilton, Ontario) was named the Player of the Month for December.
Sullivan Named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week

University of Maine sophomore goaltender Dan Sullivan (York, Pa.) was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. In addition, Maine was named Hockey East Team of the Week after its sweep of #2 Boston University at Agganis Arena in Boston.
