Men's Ice Hockey Releases 2008-09 Schedule

ORONO, Maine - University of Maine men's ice hockey coach Tim Whitehead announced his 2008-09 schedule today. The Black Bears will kick off the 2008-09 season playing in the Alaskan Goal Rush Tournament in Fairbanks, Alaska. The Black Bears play their Alfond Arena opener on Friday, October 24 when they host Hockey East rival Northeastern.

This season will feature a return of the Blue/White game which will be played on Sat., Oct. 4. Maine then travels to the University of New Brunswick for a pair of exhibition games on Oct. 10 and 11. The Black Bears then travel nearly 4,700 miles to the Fairbanks, Alaska, where they will officially kick off the season in the Alaskan Goal Rush Tournament. Maine will play Alaska Anchorage the first night and host Alaska Fairbanks the second night.

The Black Bears return home from Alaska for a season-long five game home stand. Maine will play a pair of Hockey East games when it hosts Northeastern Oct. 24 and 25. Maine then hosts Niagara for a pair of games Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. The Black Bears close the home stand with a game against defending national champion Boston College on Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. Maine then travels to Providence for a pair of games Nov. 14 and 15, before returning home to host Merrimack Nov. 21 and 22. The Black Bears will play at Vermont on Nov. 29.

In December, the Black Bears conclude their series at Northeastern on Dec. 5, before traveling to Merrimack on Sun., Dec. 7. Maine hosts non-conference Union for a pair of games on Dec. 12 and 13, to end the first half of the season. The Florida College Classic will begin with Maine facing Colgate on Dec. 27 and playing either Cornell or St. Cloud State on December 28.

The second half of the season opens with an exhibition game against the USA U-18 Team at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine on Jan. 2. Maine will then travel back to Orono to face arch rival New Hampshire on Sun., Jan. 4. The Black Bears travel to Boston University on Jan. 10, before returning home to host Bentley on Jan. 16 and Providence on Jan. 18. The Black Bears then travel to Boston College for a pair of games against the Eagles Jan. 23 and 24. Maine ends January when it hosts UMass Lowell on Jan. 30.

 

 

February opens with a single game against Massachusetts on Feb. 1. The Black Bears then travel to New Hampshire for a pair of games with the Wildcats on Feb. 6 and 7. The game on Friday will be in Durham, while Saturday's game will be played at the Verizon Center in Manchester. Maine then hosts Boston University on Feb. 13 and 14, before traveling to UMass for a pair of games on Feb. 20 and 21. Maine closes out February by hosting Vermont for a pair of games on Feb. 27 and 28 in the final home games of the season. Maine closes out the regular season the first week of March when it travels to UMass Lowell on March 6 and 7.

Maine will be playing potentially nine games against teams that competed in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
