Swimming & Diving Sweep Home Meet with Providence
ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine swimming and diving teams swept meets against visiting Providence College on Thursday evening at Wallace Pool. The women's team defeated Providence 184-109 while the Black Bear men defeated the Friars 191-85. Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario) and Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) each picked up a pair of victories for the women while Matt England (Bangor, Maine), Caleb Hoffman (Waterville, Maine) and Sergey Terrio (Oakland, Maine) each won two wins on the men's side.
On the women's side, Linden dominated the distance events as she won both the 1000-yard freestyle (10:42.74) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:14.08). Harvey swept the breaststroke events, winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.73 while taking first in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:27.35.
Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.63 and was second in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:23.52. Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) took first place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.26 and was second in the 100-yard fly at 1:00.08. Courtney Mellish (Barrie, Ontario) won the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.33) and placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.82).
Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine) won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.12 while Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.) won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.07. Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) won the 100-yard fly at 59.40.
Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) took first place in the one-meter dive with a score of 245.95.
On the men's side, England won both the 100-yard backstroke (54.34) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.46). Hoffman swept the breaststroke events, taking first in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.46) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.99). Terrio swept the butterfly events as he took first in the 100-yard fly (54.21) and the 200-yard fly (1:59.81) while finishing second in the 100-yard freestyle (50.10).
Robbie Bickford (Milford, Maine) won the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.50) and placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.77). Brent Williams (Clifton, Maine) won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:11.02 and was third in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:57.48.
Connor Devers (North Attleboro, Mass.) had a pair of second place finishes in the breaststroke events as he finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.11) and second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.18).
Travis Wibby (South Portland, Maine) swept the diving events with scores of 224.85 and 204.55.
In the relay events, Taylor Sharp (Burlington, Ontario), Harvey, Smrcinia and Dwyer combined to win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:49.40.
On the men's side, England, Hoffman, Eric Gaulin (Northport, Maine) and Shane Kinnon (Malden, Mass.) won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:40.10 while Terrio, Bickford, Kenny Regan (Hollis, N.H.) and Vittori placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:32.29.
Maine returns to the pool when they host Bowdoin on Saturday at 11 AM.
