Swimming & Diving Break 17 Records at 2013 America East Championships
ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed the 2013 America East Championships on Sunday evening at Wallace Pool. In all, the Black Bears broke a total of 17 records. The women's team placed fourth with a score of 454.5 while the men finished third with 589 points.
Sergey Terrio (Oakland, Maine) had the mark of the final day for Maine as he broke the 200-yard butterfly record with a fourth place finishing time of 1:53.01. Terrio's mark broke that of Don Winant (1:53.41) set in 1978.
Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) set a new school-record in the 200-yard breaststroke final as she placed third overall with a new school mark of 2:19.76.
After breaking the 200-yard backstroke school-record mark in the morning session with a new time of 2:04.47, Shannon Bender (Cumerland, R.I.) placed seventh in the event's finals with a time of 2:04.90. Courtney Norman (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) was 14th in the event at 2:07.42 while Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine) was 15th at 2:08.02.
The women's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass.), Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine), Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine) and Harvey set a new school-record in the event with a third place time of 3:28.31.
In the women's 1650 freestyle final, Carmen Linden (Ottawa, Ontario) placed ninth with a time of 17:38.72. Katie-Jean Hinckley (Prospect, Conn.) was tenth in the event at 17:43.65 while Kara Dubiel (Carefree, Ariz.) placed 15th in 18:01.96. Tayler Bayer (Portage, Ind.) finished 16th in the event at 18:08.02.
Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) placed fourth in the men's 1650-freestyle with a time of 16:23.69 while Robbie Bickford (Milford, Maine) was sixth at 16:38.20. Bickford was followed by David Vittori (South Berwick, Maine) in seventh at 16:45.21 while Brent Williams (Clifton, Maine) finished eighth at 16:59.47.
Matt England (Bangor, Maine) narrowly missed the school-record in the men's 200-yard backstroke final as he placed fifth in 1:52.64, just 0.40 seconds off the record time. Ryan Fahey was eighth in the event at 1:56.56 whie Will Hoffman (Waterville, Maine) placed tenth in the event at 2:02.75.
Jenn Trodden (Reading, Mass) placed fifth in the women's 100-yard freestyle final with a time of 52.17. Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) finished tenth in the event with a time of 52.64.
On the men's side in the 100-yard freestyle, Joey Quinn placed tenth at 47.94. Quinn was followed by Shane Kinnon (Malden, Mass.) in 11th at 48.37, Jon Davis (Collierville, Tenn.) in 12th at 48.82 and Jake Olsen (Georgetown, Maine) in 13th with a time of 50.02.
Abby Linn (Elkhart, Ind.) finished 12th in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:26.50 while Samantha Mathieu (Oakland, Maine) was 16th at 2:32.64.
Caleb Hoffman (Waterville, Maine) finished fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke final at 2:08.47. Connor Devers (North Attleboro, Mass.) was sixth in 2:12.00 while Cody Lachance (Winslow, Maine) placed seventh in the event at 2:12.96.
Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) placed seventh in the 200-yard butterfly final with a time of 2:05.01, missing the school record by just 0.03 seconds. Taylor Sharp (Burlington, Ontario) was 13th in the event at 2:09.47 while Rebecca Bonnett (Bath, Maine) placed 14th at 2:11.32.
Cameron Dwyer (Orono, Maine) placed ninth in the event, touching the wall at 1:55.51 while Eric Gaulin (Northport, Maine) was 11th at 2:00.00.
Prelims:
Bender began the morning by setting the school-record in the 200-yard backstroke. Bender finished sixth in the event's prelim with a new school-record time of 2:04.47. Buczkowski placed 15th in the event at 2:08.68 while Norman was 16th at 2:08.75.
Fahey and England each qualified for the finals in the men's 200-yard back, placing sixth (1:54.83) and seventh (1:55.22), respectively. Will Hoffman was tenth in the event at 2:06.01.
Trodden placed eighth in the women's 100-yard freestyle prelim with a time of 52.71 while Dwyer was 14th at 53.26.
Kinnon was Maine's top finisher in the men's 100-yard freestyle as he placed tenth at 47.83. Following Kinnon was Quinn (48.03), Davis (48.63) and Olsene (50.22).
Harvey had the fifth best time in the 200-yard breaststroke prelims at 2:21.51. Linn was 12th in the event at 2:25.14 while Mathieu finished 15th at 2:32.61.
Caleb Hoffman (sixth-2:10.14), Devers (seventh-2:11.46) and Lachance (eighth-2:14.09) each qualified for the finals in the men's 200-yard breaststroke.
Smrcina placed eighth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.42 to set her up for the finals. Sharp finished 13th in the event with a time of 2:10.95 while Bonnett was 14th at 2:15.38.
Terrio qualified for the men's 200-yard fly final with an eighth place time of 1:54.70. Cameron Dwyer was ninth at 1:55.87 while Gaulin placed 11th in 1:58.43.
