CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Fresh off their opening weekend dual-meet victory over UNH, two members of the Maine men's track and field team received conference accolades for their performance as seniors Kelton Cullenberg and Justin Gagne were named America East men's track and field athletes of the week. Both came in first in their respective events and are nationally ranked with their marks, while Gagne set both a school and conference record.
Gagne didn't wait long to make history in 2013-14 as the senior heaved his way into the record books in the shot put tallying a mark of 60-05.00 (18.41-meters) which set a new school record, besting his own best mark set last year as well as a new America East-best mark. The throw currently ranks sixth in the nation. He also threw in the weight throw event with a mark of 54' 8.75" (16.68-meters) which was good for a third-place finish.
Meanwhile Cullenberg carried momentum over from his strong cross country season as he came in first overall in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:25.97. That mark is also ranked No. 1 in the conference following the opening weekend and is currently ranked third in all of division I.
The Black Bears now have close to a month to prepare for the next meet, which will be on Jan. 17-18 for a dual meet against Bates.
