CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – As outdoor track and field season slowly begins across the Northeast, the America East conference announced its 2013-14 indoor track and field All-Academic Team, as junior Wilson Adams and senior Kelton Cullenberg received the honor. This is second time Adams has been named to the team while it's the first time Cullenberg has earned the indoor track and field honor.
Adams was named a University of Maine Scholar Athlete severall weeks ago after tallying a 3.42 GPA in biological engineering. This season, he broke a 50-year record in the weight throw with a toss of 19.08 meters (62' 7.25") and shattered it again at the conference meet, winning an individual event title with a hurl of 19.67 meters (64' 6.5"). His championship mark set a new program standard for the Black Bears.
Meanwhile, Cullenberg posted a 3.91 GPA in kinesiology & physical education, which earned him the recognition as a 2014 Maine Scholar-Athlete and Dean Smith Award Winner. Coupled with his academic achievements, Cullenberg has also set two new personal-bests in the mile and 3k with times of 4:14.49 and 8:24.97, respectively. In addition, he collected a silver medal in the 5k at the America East Championships.
Maine track and field, which was scheduled to open outdoor season this weekend, had its home meet against New Hampshire and Bates canceled due to the amount of snow and ice on the outdoor track. Its next meet is scheduled for April 5 at New Hampshire.
