PHILIDELPHIA, Penn. – Several Maine track and field athletes took part in the first day of the 2014 Penn Relays, held at Franklin Field in Philidelphia, Penn. Maine had senior Kelton Cullenberg and the women's 4x100 relay team kick off the three-day meet for the Black Bears
Cullenberg stole the show for Maine as he took second in a highly competitive field of over 30 entrants in the 5000-meter run (college division). Just one runner, Dickinson's Ryan Steinbock, bested Cullenberg as he clocked in with a time of 14:25.06. That time is a new personal record for the senior distance runner as his previous top-time of 14:25.72, set at the Duke invitational on April 5-6, 2013.
The only other Maine athletes competing on Thursday was Maine's 4x100 relay team. The squad of Ashten Hacket, Jaclyn Masters, Grace MacLean and Jessica McCarthy took 59th out of 100 teams. The squad clocked in with a time of 48.62 seconds. This mark tops the previous season-best time that the quartet set last weekend at Holy Cross, as they recorded a final time of 48.90 seconds. Texas A&M's squad of Jennifer Madu, Ashton Purvis, Kamaria Brown and Olivia Ekpone took top-honors in the event with a mark of 44.09.
The Black Bears will continue at the Penn Relays tomorrow as Brian Woodbury (shot put) Justin Gagne (shot put/discus) and the women's 4x200 team will be in action with more events for the Black Bears on Saturday.
