Women's Basketball Receives High Marks on Incoming Recruiting Class
The University of Maine women’s basketball program recently completed its 2012 recruiting season and will add nine newcomers to this season’s squad. The Black Bears locked up three student-athletes from the United States in the fall signing period before going on to ink six overseas student-athletes in the spring. Maine’s incoming class of nine has received high marks in terms of overall recruiting class rankings.

Strong Effort Falls Short as #8 Maine Falls to #1 Boston University in Quarterfinal Action, 52-43
Despite a strong effort in Friday’s quarterfinal matchup, the #8 Black Bears’ season came to an end with a 52-43 loss to #1 Boston University. Courtney Anderson (Greene, Maine) led Maine with a career-high 13 points while Samantha Baranowski (Stanhope, N.J.) chipped in eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Samantha Baranowski (Stanhope, N.J.) and Danielle Walczak (Lee, N.H.) have each been honored with post season accolades by the America East Conference. Clutch free throw shooting, offensive rebounding and defensive efforts down the stretch proved to be the difference as the Black Bears picked up their first America East tournament win since 2006, downing #9 Stony Brook 49-43 in Thursday evening’s opening round matchup. Samantha Baranowski (Stanhope, N.J.) paced the Black Bear attack with 16 points and eight rebounds while Danielle Walczak (Lee, N.H.) added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Late Rally Propels Maine Past Stony Brook on Senior Day
The Black Bears used a late rally to overcome a seven point deficit and eventually took a lead with a little over a minute left that it would not relinquish as Maine closed out senior day with a 45-40 win over visiting Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon. Brittany Williams (Rochester, N.Y.) paced the Maine attack as the senior totaled a game-high 12 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists to earn her Maine's America East Player of the Game. The win moves Maine to 7-22 and 4-12 in America East play while the Seawolves fall to 4-25, 1-15 in league action.

The Black Bears (6-22, 3-12 America East) showed a great second half fight Wednesday evening at New Hampshire (15-12, 8-7), fighting back multiple times from down by double-digits to cut the lead to as little as five at one point. However, the Black Bears never could even things up, falling to the Wildcats 65-53. Brittany Williams (Rochester, N.Y.) was named Maine's America East Player of the Game as she tallied 13 points with four rebounds.

Samantha Baranowski was named Maine’s America East Player of the Game as she recorded a career-high 18 points while going 10-for-14 from the free throw line, to lead the Maine attack.

The Black Bears would open its finale at the Gator Holiday Classic with a solid opening of the first half before falling behind after Charleston Southern staged one of its few big runs of the game. Maine was unable to close the gap in the second half as it dropped the contest to the Buccaneers 78-63. Shareka Maner (Spring Hill, Fla.) tallied a career-high 13 points while pulling down eight rebounds to lead the Black Bears. Maine falls to 3-9 overall while Charleston Southern improves to 7-4.

Courtney Anderson (Greene, Maine) paced Maine with six points, three rebounds and three assists as the Black Bears slip back to 3-8 overall while Duquesne improves to 10-1.

The University of Maine women's basketball team found itself in a deep hole, down 20 points in the second half on Sunday afternoon at UMass. The Black Bears were able to battle back, fighting to within nine but ran out of time late as they fell 63-54 to the Minutewomen at the Mullins Center. Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) led the way for Maine as she scored all 10 of her points in the second half while adding five rebounds.

Samantha Wheeler (Derry, N.H.) scored 15 of her 18 points in the second half but James Madison remained tough down the stretch as the Dukes would defeat Maine 64-47. The loss drops the Black Bears back to 3-6 while JMU improves to 6-1 overall.

The University of Maine women’s basketball team (3-5) returns home from the Navy Classic to host James Madison (5-1) on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. in Memorial Gym for the Black Bears’ fifth home game of the season, and the third time playing inside ‘The Pit’.

Black Bears Downed by Navy, 73-56
The Black Bears ran into a hot shooting Navy squad on Saturday afternoon as the Midshipmen shot 53.2% from the field, including 12-for-22 from beyond the arc, en route to a 73-56 victory. Samantha Wheeler (Derry, N.H.) led the Black Bears, narrowly missing a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Samantha Baranowski (Stanhope, N.J.) also had 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting and was named to the Navy Classic All-Tournament team.

Maine and George Washington would engage in a tight battle in the opening round of the Navy Classic. A game which saw seven ties and nine lead changes would eventually go to the Colonials who pulled ahead a bit at the end, taking the game 54-46.

The University of Maine women’s basketball team (3-3) will travel for the first time in four games as it visits the Naval Academy for the Navy Classic. The Black Bears will battle George Washington on Friday at 3:30 p.m. before playing the host team Navy on Saturday at 3:30.

Eleven Black Bears etched their names into the scoring column on Tuesday evening as the Maine women's basketball squad routed Maine Maritime Academy 73-37 in The Pit. The win moves Maine to 3-3 on the season as the Mariners slip back to 2-2. Courtney Anderson (Greene, Maine) paced the Maine attack with 10 points as she went 2-for-2 from beyond the arc while Maine's America East Player of the Game Shareka Maner (Spring Hill, Fla.) had nine points and five boards.

Ashleigh Roberts' (Wilmington, Del.) fastbreak layup with just seconds left in regulation would tie things up at 56-56, sending the Dead River Company Classic Championship into overtime. However, Brown would outscore the Black Bears by a slim 5-3 margin in the extra session to give them the Championship by a final score of 61-59.

Women's Basketball Hosts Bryant in Home Opener at Memorial Gym
The University of Maine women’s basketball team welcomes Bryant to Memorial Gymnasium for this afternoon’s home opener for the Black Bears. Maine enters the contest 9-1 in its last 10 home openers and will be looking for its second win in a row after defeating Rhode Island last Sunday, 62-58. The women’s basketball team last played in Memorial Gym on Jan. 26, 1993 when it defeated Dartmouth 60-59 in an overtime thriller.

The Black Bears improve to 1-1 on the season while the Rams fall to 0-2.

The University of Maine women’s basketball team will meet the Rams of Rhode Island on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. in game two of the 2011-12 season. This will be the first meeting of the two teams since the 2005 season. Both teams enter this contest at 0-1 and in search of their first wins of the season.

The Black Bears opened up the 2011-12 season with a tough battle, fighting back from 11 points down and cutting the Central Connecticut State lead to just two very late but ran out of time, dropping the opening contest 53-48 to the Blue Devils. Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) paced the Maine attack with 16 points and six rebounds while Brittany Williams (Rochester, N.Y.) chipped in a nine point effort to go along with a career-high eight rebounds.

The University of Maine women's basketball team showcased its 2011-12 squad for the first time in competitive action on Sunday afternoon when it defeated visiting New Brunswick 78-62 in an exhibition contest. The Black Bears were led by Shareka Maner (Spring Hill, Fla.) who tallied a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) and Corinne Wellington (Rochester, N.Y.) each poured in 13 points.

The Black Bears are coming off a 4-25 season in which they finished ninth in the conference at 2-14.
