Women's Basketball Falls at UMBC
BALTIMORE, Md. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team held tight to UMBC throughout the first half but fell in the end by a score of 66-44. The loss slips Maine back to 6-17 and 3-7 in league play while the Retrievers improve to 12-12 and 6-5 in America East play. Samantha Baranowski (Stanhope, N.J.) led the Black Bears with nine points and a career-high 14 rebounds as she was named Maine's America East Player of the Game.
Brittany Williams (Rochester, N.Y.) and Courtney Anderson (Greene, Maine) each added eight points. Erin Brown paced the UMBC attack with 18 points on 8-for-16 shooting.
After much back and forth action in the opening minutes, Baranowski capitalized on a pair of offensive rebounds before netting a layup to give Maine its first lead of the contest 5:15 into the first half. Back-to-back layups down low by Danielle Walczak (Lee, N.H.) extended the Maine lead to four, 12-8, with 12:23 remaining in the first half.
UMBC responded, breaking out on a 9-0 run over the next four minutes, powered by five points by Erin Brown, take a 17-12 advantage with just over eight minutes to play in the opening half.
The Black Bears would answer with a 9-4 run of their own, cutting the deficit to just one. Williams started the run with a fastbreak layup after forcing a steal at midcourt. After a UMBC layup, Courney Anderson nailed a three from the top of the key. A Michelle Kurowski three at the other end was the answer for the Retrievers but Maine capped off its run with a layup by Walczak followed by a quick fastbreak layin by Rebecca Knight (Alfred, Maine) cutting the lead to 22-21.
However, the Retrievers ended the half strong, running its lead up to seven after Brown worked her way inside for a layup with just one second left.
Baranowski led the Black Bears in the first half as she pulled down 12 rebounds to go along with four points while Williams added eight points.
Maine opened the second half with a pair of free throws by Baranowski, cutting the lead to just five early on. However, the Retrievers responded, going on a 10-0 run over the next 4:18. Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) put an end to the run with a jumper off an assist by Williams.
The Retrievers kept extending their lead as an 11-0 run gave them a 54-31 advantage with 9:38 to play in the half.
The Black Bears kept fighting as Anderson knocked down her second three-pointer of the contest off an assist by Williams. Maine continued its 5-0 run as Anderson worked the offense, swinging the ball around the key and finding Knight who hit a jumper from the left side, cutting the Retriever lead to 18.
UMBC's lead would once again reach 24 down the stretch at 66-42. A pair of free throws at the end by Corinne Wellington (Rochester, N.Y.) brought the score to 66-44 as the Retrievers took the America East contest.
The Black Bears return home to host Boston University on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
