ORONO, Maine -- The Black Bears (1-14, 0-2 AE) return to the road as they travel to take on the defending America East champion Albany Great Danes (11-3, 2-0 AE) on Saturday at 5 PM from SEFCU Arena.
Maine is coming off a 52-37 loss against Hartford in its conference home opener at Alfond Arena. Danielle Walczak led the Maine charge with 15 points on 6-for-13 shooting and three free throws. Chantel Charles chipped in seven points while fellow freshman Lauren Bodine added six points with a pair of three-point shots. The Black Bears enter Saturday averaging 50.3 points per game while giving up 67.2 PPG. Maine is shooting 35.0% from the field, 26.3% from three-point range and 65.5% from the free throw line. Maine averages 36.9 rebounds per game, 11.6 assists and 6.9 steals while forcing 16.3 turnovers.
Junior guard Ashleigh Roberts leads the Black Bears in scoring as she is netting 9.9 points per game to go along with 4.7 rebounds while shooting 41.3% from the field. Danielle Walczak is chipping in 9.6 PPG to go along with 4.6 rebounds and leads the team with a 43.5% mark from the field. Walczak leads the team in conference only games with 10.5 PPG. Freshman Liz Wood is netting 6.5 PPG while leading the Black Bears with 5.7 rebounds per game and a team-high 2.4 assists. Courtney Anderson is adding 6.1 PPG with 2.9 rebounds and 1.7 assists and is averaging 10.0 PPG in America East play. Anna Heise is averaging 6.4 PPG with 3.5 rebounds while fellow freshman Sophie Weckström is adding 3.0 PPG and 2.2 assists.
Albany enters the matchup winners of nine of its last 10 with the only setback coming with an overtime loss vs. Sam Houston State. The Great Danes are looking for their third-straight league win after defeating Binghamton 72-47 on Jan. 5. Shereesha Richard led the Albany attack last time out with 18 points while Megan Criag had 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Ebone Henry leads the Great Danes with 14.0 points per game, second highest in the conference, to go along with 5.3 rebounds. Craig is chipping in 12.1 points and 5.3 rebounds while Lindsey Lowrie is adding 9.6 points. Julie Forster second in the league in rebounding at 8.9 per game, is also adding 9.1 points while Sarah Royals is netting 4.6 points and a team-high 3.4 assists. This will be the 26th meeting between Maine and Albany with the Black Bears holding the career series advantage 16-9. The Great Danes have won five straight against Maine with the Black Bears last win coming on Jan. 28, 2010 by a score of 61-58 at Albany. Albany won the last meeting by a score of 68-55 on Feb. 11, 2012. In that game, Corinne Wellington totaled nine points and 11 rebounds while Walczak added eight points and five boards.
