Women's Basketball Falls in Regular Season Finale to UNH
ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team closed out the 2012-13 regular season with an 86-63 loss to visiting New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon inside Memorial Gym. Four scorers totaled double-figures for Maine led by Lauren Bodine's (Louisville, Ky.) 18 points and three rebounds.
Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Black Bears while Liz Wood (Catlett, Va.) chipped in 13 points and Courtney Anderson (Greene, Maine) tallied 10 points. The Black Bears shot 36.7% from the field including a 41.4% mark in the opening half.
Maine stormed out of the gate as it raced to leads of 4-0 and 6-4 on back-to-back buckets from Wood. New Hampshire answered the quick Maine start with an 11-0 run to take a 17-6 lead with 13:06 left in the opening half.
The Black Bears kept charging as it strung together a 4-0 run to cut the Wildcat lead down to seven. Sophie Weckström (Espoo, Finland) started the run by finding Chantel Charles (London, U.K.) down low for two before a made Roberts bucket cut the lead into single digits.
A 6-0 New Hampshire run gave the Wildcats their biggest lead of the first half when a Cari Reed three-pointer gave them a 13-point edge with 10:14 remaining in the half.
The Black Bears kept the pressure on as it broke out a 10-4 run, helped by a pair of Bodine three-pointers, to once again cut the Wildcat lead down to seven, 30-23, with 5:44 on the clock. Maine would get the lead all the way back down to six and hold the Wildcats in check for the remainder of the half as it would trail 42-34 at the break.
Bodine led the Black Bears in the first half with 11 points, including a trio of three-pointers, while Wood added 10.
New Hampshire started the second half on a 9-2 run, stretching its lead to 15, 2:40 into the second half.
Maine strung together a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to once against erase the Wildcat lead all the way back down to seven. Layups from Bodine and Wood jump started the run before Anderson's floater in the lane cut the lead to 11. Anderson, who was fouled on the make, knocked down her free throw before Weckström kicked the ball out wide to Bodine. Bodine would knock down the shot from beyond the arc to bring Maine within seven, 53-46.
That would be as close as Maine would get as an extended Wildcat run gave them a 79-55 lead with 3:40 to play. The Black Bears kept the charge on but ran out of time, dropping the contest 86-63.
The Black Bears are scheduled to play Albany in the quarterfinals of the America East tournament at SEFCU Arena in Albany, N.Y. on Friday, March 9 at 6 PM.
