Roberts, Wood and Koizar Lead Women's Basketball Past Brown 60-59
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Sigi Koizar (Vienna, Austria) scored a layup with 1:03 left in regulation to tie the game at 59-59 and then hit a free throw with just two seconds remaining to give the University of Maine women's basketball team a 60-59 win over Brown on Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center in Providence, R.I. Maine improves to 5-2 on the season with the victory, while Brown evens its record to 4-4.
Maine jumped out to an early 11-4 lead off a balanced scoring attack inside. Liz Wood (Catlett, Va.) led the way with four points during the run. The Black Bears consistently held a 10 point advantage much of the first half, prior to the Brown Bears using an 8-0 run to pull to within two points at 28-26. Maine closed the half on a 5-2 run to take a 33-28 lead into intermission. Lauren Bodine (Louisville, KY) had a three point field goal, while Ashleigh Roberts (Wilmington, Del.) closed the half with a layup.
Brown scored five quick points to open the second half and knot the score at 33-33. The two teams traded hoops before Brown hit a three point field goal by Sophie Bikofsky to take a 40-37 lead. Back-to-back layups by Anna Heise (Halle, Germany) and Sophie Weckstrom (Espoo, Finland) gave Maine the lead once again at 41-40.
A jump shot by Ashleigh Roberts with 7:14 remaining in the game gave the Black Bears a 51-45 lead, but Brown would not go away, eventually taking the 55-54 lead with 3:37 remaining. Maine answered back on a Roberts free throw and a hoop by Wood.
The game was tied 57-57 with 2:30 to play, before a layup by Bikofsky gave Brown a 59-57 lead. Koizar tied the game with a layup and then her free throw with just two seconds remaining gave the Black Bears the victory.
Maine shot 43.9 percent for the game and outrebounded Brown 36-32. Roberts led the way for the Black Bears with 15 points and seven boards. Wood finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Koizar shot 5-for-7 from the floor to add 11 points as well.
Lauren Clarke led Brown with 19 points, while Bikofsky had 13 and a nine rebounds.
Maine returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 8 when it faces Fairfield at 2 PM in the second game of the Brown Classic.
